Free Quilling Patterns - The Source for Your Quilling Inspiration!

For those who are new to Quilling, I envy you. This is a very exciting time & I'm sure you'll be more than pleased with the results you get from the work you put in! If you're seasoned quiller, you can always learn new things & pick up inspiration from loads of free quilling patterns found.

Many newbies ask me what tools are required when starting out:

Free Quilling Patterns: The source for your inspiration. Quilling designs can be made from almost any structure or shape you see around you, such as honeycombs, animals, insects etc, but for a plethora of inspirational material, I would recommend consulting free quilling patterns.

Quilling paper strips are an essential addition to make any quilling design. The most common width for strips used in quilling is about 1/8 inch but these strips can range from about 1/16 to about ½ inches. Strips are essential for making coils & 3D patterns.

Many of you are probably wondering why you would need to buy paper strips if you can just cut your own. Though this may be true, there are 2 important points to remember; one, the paper width needs to be precise & any imperfections can mess up your design; two, it can be very time-consuming to cut up various strips. It may be much easier & effective to buy a pack of strips for a particular size. These are readily available for about $3 and are even available in various colors.

Glue: Not much to say here except that any standard white paper glue should be sufficient to use. I would suggest trying different types of paper glue to try & find the one you are happy with or works best for you.

A curling tool is a great piece of instrument to have in your inventory. Of course, you can improvise and use a similar everyday tool such as a needle or pin. The main advantage with a quilling tool, is that the end of this tool can 'grab' the end of a strip of paper and allow you roll up your strip to about as tight as you want. Again, although useful, a quilling tool isn't essential.

For many advanced quillers, no tool is used to create paper coils. Instead they are able to accomplish this rolling effect by simply using their fingers! Of course, I have heard from many of these quillers that doing this tends to create a much tighter coil with a smaller centre hole than would be achieved with a quilling tool. If you are able to do this, it may be worth trying if you want a tighter coil.

The tools mentioned are the essential requirements for quillng tasks. However, from experience, I can tell you that one of the most important tools needed, is free quilling patterns! Free quillng patterns provide a wealth of inspiration for your quilling ideas & can allow you to have a clear goal in mind and ensure that you are working towards a set objective.
