Don’t be deceived by his dreadlocks, he is not a Rastafarian; rather he is referred to as prolific youth Positive Entertainer (PYPE), a name given to him by his manager due to his versatility in music and arts in total.
Christened Olayiwola Majekodunmi, General PYPE (stage name) developed his passion for music in the late 80’s. He started out with a private Choir named Triumphant Coral Voices headed by Mike Ohiri. There he learnt the rudiments of music and the act of singing, specifically he sang Base.
After some years with the Triumphant Coral voices, PYPE decided to withdraw from the Choir in order to discover his other sides of music aside the Classical music which he was used to. This led him to his discovery of different genres of music in which fortunately for him he could fit in.
In 2003, he became a professional Artiste, performing live at events, concerts, and doing studio collabos with both renowned and upcoming artistes.
Though he has a wide repertoire of written songs, the Prolific Entertainer says he feels better performing live as it gives him the opportunity to express his creativity, adding that he has stopped writing songs for now.
In an interview with Goodlife, PYPE revealed that he did about 85 collabos last year, all songs mostly done as freestyle. He further added that he has done collabos with almost all Nigerian Artistes, both popular and upcoming because music for him is not all about money, he just wants to be happy doing what he loves doing.
He recently featured in Keffi’s album which was released December last year, and also MI’s TEASER which is currently making waves across media airwaves in Nigeria. The song is also Rhythm 93.7fm hit song of the week.
The dreadlocks artiste also hinted that though he has 3 recorded songs titled keep it cool, Get Lost, and Stammarer (afrobeat) already making waves, his album of about 15-18 tracks is about 90% ready. PYPE therefore urges his fans to get ready for his different moods in the soon to be released album.
On his take about the Nigerian music industry, he says though the industry is growing fast, it still has a slave mentality, and expresses hope that things would get better in future.
General PYPE further adds that his desire is to make a positive statement with his music, giving music a new face of entertainment and to be able to rank in the same profile with top International artistes through his brand of music and his new Management Company, Podium Worldwide Entertainment.
On his dreadlocks, he says, it’s got nothing to do with his current style of dancehall music, because music is not about the style of your hair, its much more than that. Back to the dreadlock story, PYPE revealed that growing up as a boy, he had never really liked cutting his hair and don’t like the idea of braiding, so 4 years ago he decided to stop cutting his hair.
For him God and his friends are his inspiration. He also expresses his gratitude to his family for their support, especially his mum who bought him his first guitar.
Aside music the talented artiste also carves, and has an eye for Arts.
