There was widespread discontent among African Americans and it was spurred on by radical activists like Malcolm X. At the time, the blacks were making it known that their patience had run out and they were demanding cessation of the societal inequalities they were facing. The dominant theme of songs switched from hope and entertainment to desolation and grimness, a reflection of the cultural shift.
The recurring theme in hip hop and rap music became the ghetto life reality while a gangster style was taken up. This led to the association of negative images and ideals with hip hop, especially when Hip hop burst into the lime light in the 90s.
One of these negative images was the celebration of street warfare. Hip hop lyrics at the time show a fascination with fighting and killing one's perceived ‘haters'. It was portrayed that murder was the only effective way to resolve disputes.
The common enemy was seen as the police and many lyrics spoke extensively on the need to be rid of law enforcement. An example is cop killer by Tupac Shakur which told the story of a man killing a particularly irksome police officer.
Promiscuity is yet another negative image that came to be associated with hip hop. Women were portrayed as sexual objects that could be openly disrespected. Infidelity was the order of the day and a man who had many women at once earned a high regard from his peers.
Another aspect of gangster life that was elevated was that of drugs. Taking pills and smoking marijuana was classified as an ‘in' pastime without any reference to the downside of taking drugs.
