How To Get Mortal Kombat: Unchained

Posted: Jan 31, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Although it has a brand new subtitle, Mortal Kombat: Unchained for the PlayStation Portable is basically a straight port of 2004's Mortal Kombat: Deception for PlayStation 2, with longer loading times and no online play. Contrary to what one might expect, it is not based on autumn's Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, though it does not throw a few of that installment added characters. Seeing as there is so little new content in Mortal Kombat: Unchained, it is difficult to recommend Mortal Kombat fans, unless they really want a version of Deception to have on the go.

Given that Unchained is based on Deception, it includes most of the same relative strengths and weaknesses in this game. So besides the one-on-one fighting game in the heart of the experience, you get a few quirky extras in the form of chess kombat and puzzle kombat. The former adds a basic strategic layer on top of one-on-one matches, in a nod to the classic computer game Archon. The latter is a competitive puzzle game inspired by the great Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. These were exciting extras in 2004, but their news value outweighed by their quality or lasting appeal, and which now will appeal to far away for anyone who has played these conditions before. Unchained also packs in a story-driven mode called "Konquest" which comes in a lot of the large, extended fiction of Mortal Kombat universe, with numbingly bad pacing and voice acting, plus tons of pedantic tutorials. Noticeably long loading times bog down these extras, and one-on-one matches where you're stuck waiting around 20 seconds in between a typical game. Fortunately, there is a new endurance mode that lets you take successive opponents without much interruption, and that about does it for this game is new content.

It is a strange thing to say about a supposed new game, but the one-on-one battles in Mortal Kombat: Unchained has not aged particularly well. While many of the changes to the combat system in the latest Mortal Kombat: Armageddon was more a step sideways than a step forward, going back to Deception style gameplay that can not be an easy transition, even for believers Mortal Kombat fans. Meanwhile, anyone familiar with Mortal Kombat's latest development is likely to be overwhelmed by the counter-intuitive nature of the controls. Each fighter has three different games event, which often includes a weapon-based approach of some kind, and every position has its own traits and combos for you to remember. Warriors also have several special moves, but all the different characters end up feeling the same in practice because their features are analogous. Society has a stiff feel to it that does not click until you've learned all the controls of a given character's moves and combos. Especially Armageddon is fairly interesting Kreate-a-fighter mode is not here, nor custom fatality system. But these are not big losses, mainly because Unchained's bloody death is still quite a sight.

Service Directory allow a few extra characters not found in Deception, although you may have seen them in Armageddon. Jax, Kitana, Frost, Blaze, Goro and Shao Kahn are available in this installment, along with series favorites such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Raiden. They along with all of Deception's fighters, are readily available from the character select screen, so you do not have to waste your time unlocking a lot of not-so-secret warriors in Konquest mode. It is good that the character roster is bigger than before, but some of the new guys as Blaze and Goro, can not even perform fatalities, making them pretty underwhelming. Nevertheless, with more than two dozen different characters to choose from, and the game's various interactive fighting arenas, there are a lot of material to take in. And when you get the hang of the controls can be quite tactical battles and exciting, especially if you play an ad-hoc Wi-Fi battle with a friend with another copy of the game. But because Deception remains one of the only PlayStation 2 fighting game to feature online play, it's a little disappointing that there is no infrastructure online mode in this version.

While the fully 3D graphics does not seem quite as detailed on the PSP compared to Deception for PS2, the game still looks and sounds quite good and running smoothly. Gore is still what stands out about the visual, as some of the fatalities and death traps arena still carry all of their impact even on a relatively small screen. All the various battles drugs and alternate clothing for the various characters are nice, too. Hard-hitting sound effects, an aptly bloodthirsty announcer, a decent range of grunts and screams, and some moody, sinister-sounding music round out sound.

Mortal Kombat: Unchained is based on a game that was great for its time and a lot of great qualities are still here almost untouched, even done by the passage of time. But by taking online fashion out of the original version and saddling this port with longer loading times, the result is a handheld fighting game not nearly as attractive as the game it is based, especially since you can still get the original for bargain -basement prices.
