London's Top-secret Free Attractions

Posted: Jan 31, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Sometimes the best things in life are free, and London is the perfect place to find such gems. This eventful city has some truly amazing free attractions… If you know where to look!
But first, make sure to base yourself in a prime position for exploring: and centrally located Kensington hotels come highly recommended. Just west of downtown London, Kensington is a secure and affluent neighbourhood and a great place to retreat after day trips.
Now for the exciting part: Getting behind the scenes in London Town!
You have probably heard of the Tower of London and some of the famous and infamous stories that originate from there… but have you heard of the Yeoman Warders? These watchmen perform the Ceremony of the Keys, and with a little savvy you can witness the ritual away from the crowds.
Every night at 9.30pm the Yeoman Warders take their ceremonial patrol and lock the outer gates of the Tower, a spectacle that offers visitors an inside look at the workings of the Tower—free of charge.
To see the ceremony you need to book about three months in advance, and you can do this by writing to the Ceremony of the Keys Office and giving them two possible dates for your arrival. So be sure to secure your view of Tower of London at dusk; when the mysteries come to life!
Another place of intrigue is the Royal Courts of Justice, which is housed in a grand building in Central London. Here you can wander the chambers and sit in on important court hearings!
The elaborate building and all its trimmings is worth a visit, but keep in mind a few customs: Bow to the judge when you enter court rooms, dress up a little, no pictures or mobile phones, and don't laugh at the judges and barristers in their foppish wigs!
After your eventful day retreat back to the best of hotels in Kensington, plan for another free excursion, perhaps to one the city's many fabulous museums. With so many free attractions on offer, London is ripe for the picking, so get behind the scenes today!
