Monk book review
Not all characters transition well from the screen to the written word. "Monk" is one of the most brilliant characters created for television, a hero who's as vulnerable as he is brilliant and as hilarious as he is tragic. But Lee Goldberg is extremely adept at adapting television series for novels. He's worked on scripts for "Diagnosis: Murder" and classic detective series, as well as "Monk." I had high expectations for Goldberg's first attempt of putting a Monk mystery in novel form. I was not disappointed.
"Mr. Monk Goes to the Firehouse" opens with Adrian Monk searching for a place to stay while his house is being fumigated and settling for the home of his personal assistant Natalie. He arrives to find Natalie's 12 year-old daughter Julie sobbing over the violent death of Sparky, the mascot of the local firehouse. With the help of his usual allies Capt. Leland Stottlemeyer and Lt. Randy Disher, Monk connects the crime with a nearby arson and the murder of an aging busybody who was preventing a major land development deal. When Monk implicates a suspect with friends in high places, he and Capt. Stottlemeyer find their careers threatened.
The entire novel is told from Natalie's 1st person point of view. As with any story, the 1st person point of view is somewhat limiting, but that never detracted from the quality of a Sherlock Holmes mystery, and Natalie's Dr. Watson role is less of a hindrance than a new angle to look at the familiar characters of the series from. Goldberg also finds creative ways to have Natalie witness scenes she's not directly present at.
Lee Goldberg's approach to Monk is a little exaggerated at times. Monk has never been a subtle character, but there are moments in the book where the character seems at least twice as obsessive compulsive as in the series. The other characters seem slightly out of character from time to time as well. For the most part, however, Goldberg's characterizations are so perfect that it's easy to imagine Tony Shaloub, Traylor Howard, and cast going through the motions. In fact, Goldberg gets under the skin of the familiar characters and offers up moments where they seem more flesh and blood than they ever did on the screen.
The casual pace of the novel format allows for more humor and plot twist than an hour-long TV episode would allow. Goldberg provides consistent chuckles and even an occasional belly laugh throughout the entire length of "Mr. Monk Goes to the Firehouse." He also provides enough plot twists that keep the surprises coming until the very last page.
