Pac Man Championship Edition

Whether you are a computer veteran or new to the game, somewhere at some point you've probably heard of Pac-Man, or even seen a sort of Pac-Man paraphernalia around. In my opinion, Pac-Man like Marmite: you either love it or hate it. I have to be honest, for the longest time, I hated Pac-Man. I found the game boring and repetitive, though I could see how the game was popular when it was first released back in 1980. But after 30 years in clones and remakes of the game, I really began to hate the Pac-Man with a passion. That is, until now. Pac-Man Championship Edition has actually managed to breathe life into an old game without losing its roots. Although it has had a tremendous amount of success on Xbox Live, we had to wait over three years before finally ported Namco Bandai Pac-Man for our beloved handheld console.

When starting up Pac-Man Championship Edition, I was somewhat surprised at the lack of music in the background of the menu screen. In fact I actually checked to see if the sound was up high enough on the PSP. It was only pressing the Start button, I heard the familiar sound Pac-Man makes when he eats Pac dots when I navigated through the menu screens. When selecting play, you are soon greeted with the sound of Pac-Man and the ghosts that play back mode select screen. You get six game modes to play, each has a different deadline to rack up the highest score possible. What makes this Pac-Man games differ from other Pac-Man game out there is that instead of your primary goal is to survive as long as you can in this one you have to get the highest score you possibly can within the time limit. Although not a large difference between each mode, will each require you to easily adjust your playing style. For example, with Challenge Mode 2 maze in complete darkness and only visible just around Pac-Man, which is not so bad before you eat most of the Pac dots and then have no idea whether it is a wall or an opening over you when you are chased by ghosts. Unlike previous installments of Pac-Man where you clear the maze of Pac dots that this time you assemble patterns of Pac dots. After collecting a full pattern of Pac dots, a different pattern appears in the maze. To make things even more interesting half of the maze actually changes when you collect the items. The item appears only if you have collected all the Pac dots on the opposite side of the screen. I found myself spending hours without knowing it while you play the Championship Mode is trying to beat my old score and opening of new branches of the maze, which I took to the collection each item.

When you start one of the states, you are welcomed with the same Pac-Man song that you hear at the beginning of most Pac-Man game. After that, the only thing you can really hear Pac-Man and ghosts, but if you listen very carefully, you can just hear the sound of what could almost be described as techno music played in the background of sound effects. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no way of actually turning the music up very weak or even completely off, but no reason to worry as chances are you probably do not even notice it unless you are caught by ghosts. As you later in the game, you will find the ghosts and Pac-Man will begin to accelerate, making quick reflexes a necessity and not just a bonus.

If trying to beat your high score on six different challenges is not incentive enough to keep you playing for hours, Namco Bandai also prices for you to earn throughout the game, such as eating 8 ghosts in succession, or earn a high score of 400,000 . There is only twelve prices of everything for you to serve, but it was more than enough to keep me coming back and spend hours at a time, trying to beat my previous scores on each challenge and earn each award, although I still yet to do so.

The only thing I felt was missing was that the original Pac-Man games were not included. Although I am not a Pac-Man fan as a bonus it would have been nice to include the original version to all the fans out there. It does not make the game lose some of its charm, though, as there are plenty of modes and bonuses to contend with. Pac-Man Championship Edition should keep any gamer playing for hours.
