Sarah-Jane Szikora Starts Sculptures

Sarah-Jane Szikora has stated that she is creating sculpture versions of her artwork.

Some Sarah-Jane Szikora prints including Smartypants, a gingerbread man wearing trousers made from Smarties, and Rude Food, a gingerbread women pole dancing, are in the process of being turned into sculptures.

The north-east artist revealed some raw early-stage photos of the sculptures on her official blog and said that they would be ready once the final tweaks and colours had been applied.

She said: "It has been a lovely change working with a different media. I'm also getting some smashing days out travelling back and forth to the Scottish Borders where we are moulding and casting the pieces."

This is not the first time that Szikora has worked outside of producing paintings as she has previously created a giftware collection for Royal Worcester featuring mugs, cups, saucers and vases.

Images usually associated with Sarah-Jane Szikora prints such as cheeky confectionary characters and larger than life ladies were transferred onto the exteriors of the Royal Worcester giftware collection.

Bennetts Online Store said: "Local dance studios were a basis for her ideas and far from ridiculing her characters, she promotes the idea of a society that is happy and confident, comfortable with different body shapes."

Furthermore, in the early nineties Szikora set up a company called Wild Thing which sold hand making papier-mâché models out of a shop in York.

Szikora reported on her blog that she is currently busying her self by creating gingerbread Christmas cards which will be sold with all the proceeds going toward the Alzheimer Society.

"I am thrilled by how they are flying out and the Alzheimer's Society benefit every time a pack is sold - so a big thank you to everyone who has chosen them," she added.

Earlier in the year, the artist announced that that she was involved in the design and refurbishment of three dementia wards in Bradford teaching hospitals having cared for her mother who suffered from the illness.

She wrote in her blog: "Through art, I can also use the experience and hopefully turn it into something positive for others. We must always strive to see the brighter side of life amidst the darkness of living. Laughter, after all, is the best medicine."

Szikora said that she would release some more information about her gingerbread projects in the run up to Christmas.

Sarah-Jane Szikora prints have been exhibited around the United Kingdom in most major cities.
