‘smallville’ and the Writers' Strike

As with a number of currently airing shows on television, the Tom Welling-led Smallville will also likely feel the ripple effects from the ongoing writers guild boycott. Fortunately, at least Smallville will still manage to shoot a few more episodes before they run out of original material.

Despite the fact that Smallville films in Vancouver, B.C., the durable series will not be spared the repercussions of the potentially lengthy walkout, because its writers are still Hollywood-based and have therefore gone on to join their comrades in ceasing to work. While there has been no official report regarding the actual number of installments already penned for the series, prior to the writer’s strike which began on Monday, it appears that Smallville has enough to go on until halfway through this, its seventh season.

Unlike other programs like Battlestar Galactica and The Office, Smallville will not immediately shut down production with the commencement of the writers’ walkout. It still has some remaining episodes in stock for the actors to shoot. As things stand, Smallville fans could possibly look forward to about five to six more new adventures before the show either has to go off the air or resort to reruns early next year.

Another thing that could prove beneficial to the series is the producers’ foresight and ingenuity. As part of their attempt to brace for the boycott, the Smallville powers-that-be had decided to end their last completed script as a cliff-hanger. The said episode, which could be their final original broadcast around the middle of February if the writers’ strike is left unresolved, can effectively double as a season finale.

In contrast, there have been rumors that Heroes’ Tim Kring had refused to do something similar to provide a neater, tighter denouement to his show, in case it winds up having an aborted second season.
