Smallville: Sayonara, Smallville?
The seventh season of Superman's early teenage years is just around the corner, though a lot of changes are on the horizon for the show. And while discussions for a planned eighth season are already underway, there's a distinct possibility that it may be the swan song for the chronicles of the young superhero, according to series creator Al Gough. In an interview with iF magazine, he specifically stated that the cast and crew of the show definitely wanted to have an eighth season, but also that it would be the finale for the show. It may very well conclude with Clark donning the iconic red and blue tights, and starting his guardianship of Metropolis and the world.
But on the other hand, he also said that they remained opened to the possibility of still continuing beyond eight seasons, if fans voiced their opinion strongly enough and if the show's ratings remained on top. But major changes are already in the works for the eighth season. Fans will have to say farewell to Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor, Clark Kent's best friend who eventually became one of his most famous foes in the DC Comics realm. Rosenbaum is also known for voicing Wally West, the Flash in the DC animated series Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited.
Also gone from the cast is Annette O'Toole, who played Clark's mother, Martha Kent. However, Rosenbaum may yet come back in a few select episodes as a guest star, Gough explained. But in the nearer future, other things to look forward to in the upcoming seventh season include the appearance of Kara Zor-el, more famously well-known in the DC Comics world as Supergirl. Also appearing in the role of Dr. Knox is Dean Cain, who played Superman in the 90s series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
