TELL MAGAZINE CELEBRATES TEN YEARS OF DEMOCRACY

May 29th this year marked ten years of unbroken, uninterrupted Civilian rule in Nigeria. It was tagged Democracy day by former President General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 and has since been observed as public holiday.

As part of activities lined up to mark this year Democracy day, Tell Magazine organised a one day International Conference on Ten years of Democracy in Nigeria.

Chaired by one time Military Head of State, Retired General Yakubu Gowon, the event was well attended by Nigerians from all walks of life and the media in particular.

Delivering his speech, the Vice-President of Nigeria, Jonathan Goodluck who represented the president, assured that Nigeria will continue to redress the flaws in the Nation’s democracy adding that the country will not wait for centuries to effect that change.

He also stressed the fact that stability is the key factor to development in any Nation, emphasizing that politics is a grassroot business.

The Vice-President further urged Nigerians to b e patriotic, so as to protect the Nations interest.

Earlier in his welcome addres, the Chairman of the occasion, General yakubu Gowon, urged serving Milliatry personels to shun the idea of Coup detat as it only draws the nation backward. He further urged serving Military Personnels who are interested in Governance to retire from the Millitary before venturing into politica and public service.

Described as a friend of Africa by Vice President Jonathan Goodluck, the guest Speaker of the day, former America Secretary of State ,General Collin.L.Powell congratulated Nigeria on the nation’s ten years uninterrupted democratic rule

Recalling the ordeals and struggle of the Nation before achieving democracy in 1999, he described his role as an observer in the 1999 election as one of his fulfilling roles, being a great admirer and believer of the Nigerian Nation.

General Powell further highlighted a free Press as an essential feature of a true democracy adding that the Press as an insurer of the People’s interest.

He therefore urged both present and past leaders to uphold the rule of law as they come together to deal with the vestiges that has kept the country backward.

The onetime National security Adviser to President Reagan, further assured of America’s support for Nigeria.

General Powell is currently a Strategic Partner with so many organisations.
