The Amazing Arts Scene of Manchester

Manchester is famous for its music scene. After all, a plethora of Britain's most popular bands came from humble beginnings in this city and have given the area a reputation for being at the cutting edge of musical innovation.

However, a rollicking music scene isn't all Manchester has to offer. With a culture constantly changing, abuzz with inspiration from the past and the present, Manchester's arts scene is yet another force to be reckoned with in this beautiful, friendly city - so gallery buffs take note!

Manchester is crammed with art galleries, all of which are bursting at the seams with some of the most breathtaking artwork to be seen. Manchester Art Gallery is an obvious first choice, with stunning rooms displaying majestic works by some of the world's most esteemed artists. You'll also find plenty of paintings and sculptures by local artists, allowing you to get a taste of what the city's art scene is really like.

The Cornerhouse is another excellent building, specialising in the moving image. This gallery boasts three cinemas as well as its three floors of galleries displaying the finest in contemporary artwork in the city.

On University of Manchester campus you'll find the Whitworth Gallery, which currently contains around 55,000 items within its walls. With enough to keep art fans coming back for days, this stunning gallery is one not to be missed.

For those looking for an art gallery with a difference, you'll be able to view photographic images of stunning works of architecture and the built environment. These are available for viewing, alongside many exhibitions, at Manchester's Cube - the Centre for Urban Built Environment - gallery.

For a cultural twist, the Chinese Arts Centre is another highly recommended gallery, stocked with incredible works of art by artists of Chinese descent from around the world. This gallery aims to promote such artists and runs a frequently changing programme of exhibitions, with a wealth of brilliant artwork to view during your visit.

These are just some of the excellent galleries that Manchester has to offer. There are far more to discover, many with different and exciting themes, as well as more traditional galleries collecting a wide range of works throughout distance and time. These galleries are fascinating as you can see art changing over the ages and many people are likely to find at least one style that speaks to them - which is why Manchester Art Gallery always makes a safe bet for a family visit.

Manchester hotels and galleries are dotted throughout the city, meaning you can always find somewhere to stay the night near an attraction you want to visit.
