The American Sitcom Fever In China
It is astonishing to see so many people in China who claimed to be huge fans of the American sitcoms. I have been asked many times during a casual conversation about which sitcom is my favorite and whatever name I gave them, they seemed to know pretty well about those TV shows.
Most people in China can not receive CBS, NBC or ABC programs, but you could find the younger generation talking more and more about those sitcoms. They could watch the serials in websites like YouTube, (YouTube is banned in China, so there are a bunch more YouTube like local websites), or they could use BT techniques downloading the link and watch more freely on their computers.
One of my Chinese friend is definitely such a TV fan. He could stay in his home the whole weekend watching different sitcoms. "I have finished the first season of Lost last weekend, this week end I am going to see the Heroes." Whenever I met him, he will ask me what is the hottest sitcom in the United States.
First I could give him quite some information, but after a while, I found him more familiar with these serials than I am. He could even give me some guidance about which sitcom was produced by which company.
I asked him "Did all your classmates share your habit?" He answered proudly "Definitely. Most of them are big fans of those TV serials, they are much better than the local TV programs."
That is not the most astonishing part yet. He told me in his English class, the teacher would use the American sitcoms as training materials. Can you believe that?
China is full of such intresting stories, I would like to show more of those lovely stories, hope you like them.
