Big Brother reality show series started in the United States and in the UK in the year 2000. The phenomenal Big Brother in the United States premiered on July 5 while the first series in the UK started on July 14 of that year. In Australia, the international based series of Big Brother begun in 1999 which was then produced in the Netherlands by Endemol as well as the Big Brother series in the United States.
The Big Brother name was derived from the novel of George Orwell which was the “Nineteen Eighty-Four”. It revolves in an imaginary place, a dystopia where there’s a dictator who is capable of seeing all actions, a leader who is called the Big Brother.
The precondition of the reality show was for a number of people which generally constitutes 14 contestants or more to live with one another in an isolated house that will last for several months. The contestants, who are called the “Housemates” or “HouseGuest” in the United States, are under the control and supervision of big Brother at all given time in the period of their stay in the Big Brother house. Big Brother was and until now especially in the ongoing series, a very rule enforcing figure of authority that monitors each and every movements and behavior of the so-called Housemates. Big Brother is also the one who rewards and provides mechanism for external requests and sets the punishments for unjust and unruly contestants.
In addition to the precondition situation of the contestants inside the Big Brother house, there are also nominations for eviction of Housemates and HouseGuest. The contestants get to choose other contestants to be nominated for eviction and the nominated contestants will be voted upon by the public by calling a telephone number with a premium rate.
In the UK the first series of the big Brother was an unexpected hit in the summer of 2000. The first series ended on the 15th of September the same year. After the success of the first series the Big Brother was then followed by succession of series and seasons as well as Big Brother US and Big Brother Australia. Even though there are other reality TV shows like Survivor also produced by Endemol which premiered shortly after Big Brother in the US and in the UK, the Big Brother first series made it through the airing time.
The prices for the Big Brother ultimate winner differ in every country especially in the first seasons where fines weren’t implemented yet to be subtracted from the prize money. In Australia the guaranteed prize money during the first season was $250,000 AUD, in the UK the first winner of the first season was awarded £70,000 and in the United States the Big Brother winner to home $500,000.
