Well the sweetest day gives you no reason to complain
.
For the natives of Northeast United States, sweetest day comes as a holiday which is celebrated on the third Saturday of October. This day took birth in Cleveland in the year 1922 when Herbert Birch Kingston who was a philanthropist and a candy company employee, thought of bringing smiles on the faces of the poor, neglected and the forgotten. To execute this great thought of his, he took the help of his friend and distributed candies and gifts among the underprivileged group. This was an effort to convey to these people that they were equally important as others and their existence was well respected and cared for. This effort by Kingston was well appreciated and gradually with passing times, much of the Clevelanders joined in to make it a big and important occasion.
Kingston did all that he could,to make the "sweetest day" popular. He used the popularity of the film stars, inviting them on this day to distribute the sweets.
As per reports, the first sweetest day welcomed actress Ann Pennington who distributed 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy acknowledging their hard labor and also as a token of thanks to them for the service that they offer to the society. This day gained so much popularity that Theda Bara, another popular star distributed a huge number of about 10,000 candies to people in Cleveland hospitals and to all those who came to watch her movie.
Sweetest day in its own way has gone through several modifications. Something that started off with an effort to boost the underprivileged and unnoticed ones, started resembling Valentines day,a day for the loved ones. Although it was not a day as big as Valentines but followed similar interests. The day saw the exchange of candies and gifts. It gives an opportunity not only to remember our relatives and loved ones but also the sick, old and orphans. The day does not relate to any religious sentiments but is merely a day to convey that "you are not alone in the walk of life, there are people who care and love you."
With so much to go its way, sweetest day had gained quite a lot of popularity, but since every popular and good thing is never spared of criticism, "sweetest day" also got a fair share of it.
Critics call the sweetest day an artificial holiday, the hype for which was created merely to raise the revenues of the cards and candy companies. But the fact remains that sweetness day has become a much anticipated holiday since it makes all of us feel more sweet and all that special
Ups and downs being the two sides of the same coin, "sweetest day" holds its popularity even today, spreading the message of love, happiness and togetherness. These days many Ecard Publishers have some really sweet cards for this holiday .You can check out some cards from 123greetings.com
