Spent about half my day in the production studio working on Music Business Radio stuff. It was me, the producer, a station executive, and an intern...all crammed into a small room.
Was working on a few edits today. I talk and the producer works the board...
So why have two extra people in where space (and ventilation) are at a premium?
Kathode Ray Music is ten years old this month and we didn't get here because I think I know everything. Yes, I'm the driving force behind this operation, but there are many people that I work with, employ, and are otherwise associated with which are much better at certain things than I am. And when that happens, I get them to do the job.
I can get on the air and talk ok, but I don't know everything about radio. That was one reason there were other people in the room...
But there is something other than talent that these guys bring to the table...
Opinion.
Sometimes we're too close to our own work to see it for what it is. Distance helps thanks temendously and lets you see the big picture, so it's always good to have people who can see things (or hear them) at a distance.
Think of Earth. It seems flat doesn't it? Personally, I've never experienced anything that would lead me to believe otherwise.
But a little distance, such as a photo from space, shows that Earth is anything but flat.
So if you're make a record, get somebody who is not directly involved and will give you an honest opinion to come in and check things out. Do the same thing with your live show and anything else you do...business or personal.
It's a good idea to take opinions with a grain of salt, but if you ask a lot of people and they all tell you the same thing, realize that they just might be onto something
