Tips on Beginning a Career in Production Design

Attaining a successful career in film production design can seem like a far fetched dream but the fact is, that for many people it is a dream that becomes reality. So, what is it that separates the people who actually achieve their dream of a career in production design and those that don't?

It can be described in one word and that word is “preparation”. Thats right! Just like any successful career, the more prepared you are the better your odds of achieving any measure of success. So, where does a person start to become prepared for a career in production design?

Actually, it can all start in high school with art and drafting classes. Also, that wood shop class that you always thought would be of no use in the real world will also come in handy when you finally enter the world of professional film and stage production design.

The fact, is that so much of what you see on the set of a film is actually fake. This means that things have to be built to mimic real things in life. All at the same time everything has to look perfectly real.

After a young person finishes their studies in high school their local community college will have more advanced courses in many of the production design related topics that they studies in high school. Also, you can get involved in college level stage productions, which can only help.

For advanced studies in production design there are actual schools and academies that can take a person to the next level in their quest for a career in production design. It is in these types of schools that you will begin to learn what it takes to prepare you for a real career in production design when you finally graduate.
