Australians love to party and have a good time. But nothing gets the Aussie dance floor going more than a classic Aussie rock song. Hands go up and the Aussie pride is palpable in the air! These classic rock songs are a source of pride and national identity for many Australians and have been passed on from generation to generation as informal national anthems.

A generation of Aussie rockers gave us these top 5 Aussie anthems – and they remain as popular today as when they were first released. These songs keep rock music alive and perhaps even spur young people to continue to buy rock music – with the internet and the online music industry making it easier than ever to buy cds online no matter when they were released!

It's a hard list to narrow down, but here's a pick of the top 5 Aussie classic rock anthems.

- AC/DC – "You shook me all night long". One of ACDC's signature songs, "You shook me all night long" was released in 1980 from their album Back in Black. Although the song enjoyed success all over the world, Australians continue to hold this song close to their chests as one of the most celebrated pieces to come from arguably Australia's most popular rock band. The song is still a regular in AC/DC's concert sets, as well as dance floors and pubs across Australia!

- Cold Chisel – "Khe Sanh". Named after the Battle of Khe Sanh from the Vietnam War, this Cold Chisel classic is still bellowed from pubs Australia wide. The song tells the story of restless and disillusioned youth in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and is very much seen as a symbol of Australian culture. The song was released in 1978 from the album Cold Chisel, and is still a juke box favourite!

- Men at Work – "Down under". One of the most patriotic and popular songs in Australia, "Down Under" also reached number 1 on US and UK charts and is recognised world-wide as Australia's unofficial national anthem. It's a favourite for Aussies on the backpacker route– after all, the song is about a travelling Australian who is proud of his nationality! The song features a couple of classic lines, such as "He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich" which are now common catchphrases. The song was released in 1981.

- Jimmy Barnes – "Working Class Man". Australians proudly sing this song as a testimony to their hard work ethic and humble origins. Also recognised as Jimmy Barnes' signature song, it was played at the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

- The Choirboys – "Run to Paradise". The signature song from Aussie rock group The Choirboys, "Run to Paradise" was released in 1987 from the album Big Bad Noise. It's another Aussie favourite – particularly on the dance floor! Pubs all around the country pump this from their juke boxes and DJ booths and for many Australians it is their home country that is the ‘paradise'!

Australia is a proud and patriotic nation and nothing symbolises that proud national culture than these classic rock songs.
