The age old question of what came first; well in this case Hairspray the Musical theatre show came first, not Hairspray the movie. Hairspray has been a hit Broadway show for years and following its recent adaption into a movie, it has now arrived in the West End.
Headlined as the Big Musical, Big Comedy and Big Hair show of 2007 it is time to let your hair down and dance the night away. Hairspay the mother of all musicals follows Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart. Recently played by Nikki Blonsky, Tracy lifestyle is disapproved of by her mother Edna, played by John Travolta in the film, but more importantly soon to be played for by British West End musical Legend Michael Ball.
Ball has loads of musical credits to his name, including playing leading roles in classic, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and A Women in White. Edna’s husband, Wilbur, played by the energetic Christopher Walken in the 2007 movie, will be played by the British Comedian Mel Smith known throughout the UK for his part in the Smith and Jones double sketch show.
Hairspray is set to launch in November to the public at the Shaftsbury Theatre and will run Monday to Saturdays Evenings, with Matinees on between Thursday and Saturday.
Theatre goers looking for a hotel and theatre package will not be disappointed, this Winter, with some great offers being available. It is safe to say that a fun time will be had by all visitors to the Shaftsbury this November.
