If the afterlife exists, probably an entire population observes Sardinia and smiles.
This population is the nuragic population which observes people who try to interpret the Tombs of the Giants, the nuragic wells, the holy sources and the nuraghi.
Sardinia counts at least 8000 ancient towers made with stones; in the past it was possible to count 20000 constructions like these. We wonder why this advanced, civil and powerful population used to spend time building towers. We wonder if their aim was religious, military or if they used to build these constructions in order to live there. Maybe we will not be able to give an answer to these questions and this is why it seems that the nuragic people laugh from the afterlife.

The sacred wells are another important element of the Sardinian megalithic heritage. At the moment we can count 40 wells reachable thanks to a monumental staircase after which there is an atrium with the water. This is a tholos room with a hole through which it is possible to look outside.
The fact that the wells were full of water (the water reminds the amniotic fluid) let us think that the wells wanted to represent the womb of the mother earth.
The descent (or the climb) of the staircase represents the passage from the light to the darkness and viceversa. The water represents the birth.
These symbols explain the astronomical orientation of the holy wells. In the case of the sacred well of Santa Cristina in Paulilatino-Oristano, it has been assessed that thanks to the hole situated on the tholos vault, the moon is reflected on the well. This happens during a predefined period, that is to say at the utmost declination of the moon, every 18 years and 6 months. Thanks to the staircase, the sun’s light is reflected in the well during the autumn equinox (between the 22nd and the 23rd of September) and also during the spring equinox (between the 20th and the 21st of March).

As for the Nuraghi and the Sacred Wells, the Tombs of Giants have been studied in relation to their astronomical orientation. Even in this case there have been some surprises: The Tombs of “Li Mezzani” in Palau (OT) and “Coddu Vecchiu” (OT) are just an example of how nuraghic people had a great knowledge of the celestial cycles. On the equinoxes days, in these two Tombs of Giants, the sunrise's light enters perfectly in the tomb corridor, through the small opening on the stele dominating the exedra.
The Tombs of Giants are constructions whose shape and size are unique and are scattered throughout the island. So far about 320 have been found, but probably Sardinia's territory is jealously hiding many more of them. The Tombs of Giants housed collective graves, probably without any class distinction. So they were probably used as charnel houses that could contain up to 200 skeletons.
