The 13-Grand Slam winner, 27 years-old Swiss Roger Federer, captured his third consecutive title at his hometown Basel in the Swiss Indoor tournament by beating the Argentine David Nalbandian 6-3, 6-4. The Swiss had an almost perfect match by hitting eight aces and accepting only seven points on his serve in the whole game.
Federer played with great style and strong serves that Nalbandian was not able to control. The Argentine expressed that he didn’t played at his best and that Federer performance was amongst his best against him. Federer was winning his services really easy and it became very difficult for Nalbandian to battle that.
At the end, even with Nalbandian’s efforts, Federer obtained his third title at Basel. This is the fourth title of the year for the Swiss and the 57th win of his professional career. Prior to win the final of the Swiss Indoor tournament, Federer faced the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez at semifinals and defeat him in straight sets. As for Nalbandian, he played the semifinals against Del Potro and beat him in straight sets as well.
By winning this tournament Federer gained the prize money of $186,000. Federer is currently the richest tennis player in the ATP; the Swiss has won more money on his time as a professional tennis player than even the former record holder Pete Sampras.
Federer expressed on this final tournament that he feels overjoyed; “There are two tournaments that I always dreamed about winning as a boy, Wimbledon and Basel. When you realize a childhood dream and realize it again and again then it's one of those places that you just want to keep winning even more at,” said the Swiss.
This tournament victory was really important for Federer’s ending season. Now his coach and his agent Tony Godsick are focusing Federer in next year’s goals, especially winning back his No.1 spot from Nadal, participating in every important tournament, particularly in the Grand Slams and winning one or more of them to surpass Sampras Grand Slam record, who won a total of 14 Grand Slams.
With these final results in this ATP season, Federer has dismissed the idea that has wondered around lately about him been old in tennis terms. For his agent, Federer is just entering a new chapter and a third phase in his tennis career that he has to enjoy to the fullest. Moreover, the Swiss still has a long way to go and a future to be written further.
Currently, Federer is facing the BNP Paribas Masters at Paris, France, where he is seeded second after Rafael Nadal and at the moment, the Swiss has passed without difficulties to the third round of the tournament. He is also classified for the year-end championship of the ATP, the Tennis Masters Cup at Shanghai, one of the most important tournaments which will start on November 9th. In addition, we just hope the best for the No.2 of the world and we also wish him to finish the season in a great way, as this exceptional player usually does.
