Canvas Wall Art - What is Canvas?
Before we get into canvas wall art we need to first understand what is a canvas? A canvas is a heavy-duty plain woven fabric. Canvas is mostly used to make tents, sails, backpacks and there is a usually used for painting purpose by artists. Canvas is also used to make hand bags and shoes.
Let's take a look at a few characteristics regarding the physical appearance of canvas. Canvas is mostly made of cotton or linen these days but was thought to be made of hemp in the old days. It's different from other heavy fabrics like cotton fabrics in that it is a plain weave but not a twill weave.
The word Canvas was derived from the word canevaz and canevas and was first used in the 13th century. Both names have their origins from the Greek word cannabis.
Canvas usually comes in two types either plain and duck. Duck comes from the Dutch word and in this type of material the thread is tightly woven. There are different methods of classification of canvas, one is on the basis of weight and the other is on the basis of graded number system. The number system is opposite in direction so when a number "10" is used it is supposed to be lighter than number "4".
Canvas has been in wide use for painting purpose for quite a while. It is used mainly for oil paintings and replacement of wooden panels. The oils used on the canvas are very particular in nature and one such used was in a French Madonna with angels. Panel painting was in great popularity in 16th and 17th century in northern Europe. Some renowned painters in these centuries were Mantegna and Venetian. Venetian canvas was termed as one of the best canvas at that time.
All this canvas is made by stretching it on a wooden frame which is called a stretcher and is coated with a gesso before use. This coat is done to avoid the direct contact of paint with the fiber of the canvas. If it is not coated it may cause the canvas to decay. A gesso is usually made of lead carbonate and linseed oil which is applied over a rabbit skin glue ground. A lead based paint is poisonous; if an artist inhales it accidently into his lungs lead pigments may enter into the lungs causing severe damage, so lead paints are to be used with great precautions. However there are many alternative canvas primers are available in the market out of which one of the most famous is a synthetic latex paint made of titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate which is bound with thermo plastic emulsion.
Before the 20th century linen canvas was used but with the passage of time came the use of cotton canvas which was often called as cotton duck. Cotton duck was termed as a cheap alternative because it stretched more fully and had an even mechanical weave. Whereas linen canvas was famous among many artists as it was made of a higher quality material but it was quite expensive.
Now-a-days there are many types of canvas arts available in the market. Among them are the two-piece wall art, 3-piece and many more. A two-piece wall art is made up of two parts which are hung together to give a complete picture.
