Cat On A Hot Tin Roof play has opened on March 6, 2008 at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre. It’s the product of Tennessee Williams’s creative genius. He has portrayed his own life through this play and brought to light his sufferings due to illness; issues like homosexuality; and common scenario of rivalry and misunderstanding prevalent in Southern families.

Williams’s work was so appreciated that he got a Pulitzer Prize for Cat On A Hot Tin Roof play in the year 1955, when the show debuted on Broadway!

This was not the first time that Tennessee Williams received a Pulitzer Prize. He had received one before in 1948 for his work “A Streetcar Named Desire.” In 1951, he was presented with a Tony Award for Best Play for his work “The Rose Tattoo.” Apart from this, he received four Drama Critics’ Circle Awards in New York. So much is the competition to get a share that the entire family lies to Big Daddy that he has got cancer and won’t live to celebrate his next birthday.

You’ll feel sorry for the distraught wife, Maggie. She had run away from her dim childhood and married into the wealthy Pollitt family, only to be ignored by her husband. However, you can’t put the blame on her husband, Brick. He, himself, is suffering from a shaken self-confidence, especially after his friend Skipper committed suicide. Brick takes the support of alcohol to ward off his depression and develops a hostile feeling towards the world.

Each character in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof play deserves to be understood. You need to grasp the emotions that Debbie Allen, director of the play, has successfully managed to extract from each character of the story.
