Come To London And See Picasso Challenging The Past

The Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was one of the most gifted and influential artists of the 20th century. Throughout his fascinating career, he pitted himself against the greatest Masters of European painting by continuing life-long artistic dialogue which is reflected in his own art. 'Picasso: Challenging the Past' explores how he absorbed the artistic works of the painters of the past and made audacious responses of his own.

Influenced by El Greco, Velázquez and Goya, Picasso was a passionate student of the grand tradition of European painting. These artists were all of crucial importance to him, as were Rembrandt, Delacroix, Ingres, Manet and Cézanne. Major paintings by all of these artists are currently displayed at the National Gallery.

Offering a fabulous collection of some 60 of Picasso's works, this exhibition invites visitors to re-explore the National Gallery's permanent collection in light of Picasso's fascination with the Old Masters.

The exhibition demonstrates how how Picasso repeatedly returned to other artists' traditional styles to develop his own pieces and their influence is clear to see in much of his work. Included in this exhibition are self portraits, male portraiture, the female nude, still life, and the seated female figure.

This fabulous collection culminates in a display of the artist's Variations where, late in life, Picasso makes direct reference to masterpieces such as Velázquez's 'Las Meninas' and Manet's 'Déjeuner sur l'Herbe', turning them into "something else entirely".

This exhibition is not to be missed.

Drawing Lesson Steps

Whether you are taking an online drawing course or a drawing lesson at a community center, most teachers will employ a step-by-step process for teaching people how to draw. This allows everyone to get a firm understanding of the basics of drawing, which will create a stronger foundation for more intermediate lessons. Even advanced teaching still tends to build, so that one technique leads into the framework of using a subsequent technique.
