A venus fly trap is perhaps one of the most exciting plants anyone can buy. It is a carnivorous plant and so eats other living creatures that it comes into contact with such as spiders and other small insects. The venus fly trap is a very clever creature/plant since it will not attempt to eat anything until it is sure it will catch it. Despite the venus fly trap having real teeth like jaws surrounding its mouth, these teeth are called trigger hairs. It is very cleverly created, as it will know when there is prey laying capable of being captured. They are bent inwards very slightly so it can sense when there is prey. It will then snap shut extremely fast. Some botanists, who have conducted extensive research into the venus fly trap and how it works, have suggested that it's jaws do not close shut entirely, and leaves a small gap open, just enough to allow the smallest insects room to escape since it will not provide the plant with enough to live on.

The venus fly trap can usually be found in swampy areas, in very few specific places in the world. They can be found in North Carolina, close the town of Wilmington, and have more recently been discovered in areas in South Carolina in the bogs there, Northern Florida, and in the Pine Barriers of New Jersey. The plant thrives in areas with maximum moisture and minimum nitrogen. Any nitrogen the plant will need is obtained from the nutrients it gets from what it eats.

It is very interesting to see however that despite these plants only being found in a handful of locations around the world, they are common houseplants since they help control the fly population within the household. Others choose to get a venus fly trap just for the pure fascination of watching it catch its prey. They are great ice breakers in any conversation with any type of person and so it is usual that people place the plant in places very obvious in a room.

Since the venus fly trap likes to live in swampy moist areas, at first thought therefore, may be considered a difficult atmosphere to maintain within the house. However, as long as the plant is well watered and well drained, and the area around it is kept humid by leaving an inch of water under the pot (using a plate) the plant will usually remain happy.
