'heroes' Returns While 'origins' Dies

The third season of NBC’s hit sci-fi series Heroes will return on air in a few months but its spin-off, Heroes: Origins, is now a shelved project. The plan for Heroes: Origins was announced about a year ago and the network even signed contracts with directors and writers Kevin Smith, Eli Roth, John August and Michael Doughtery, but NBC’s executives decided to scrap it off.

Origins was supposed to focus on new characters every week and viewers were supposed to choose who among these new characters can be placed in the upcoming season of Heroes. It was also intended to highlight how the older characters began with their powers. A few months ago, creator Tim Kring even hinted that the pilot episode would expose the secrets and meanings behind the helix symbol. But plans changed after the WGA strike.

During the network’s presentation to advertisers in New York , NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios co-chairman Ben Silverman explained their decision. “We were taxing our creative team to do too much around that,” he said. “We wanted 35 'Heroes' and 12 'Heroes: Origins,' each of which was supposed to be a mini-movie and backdoor pilot. We reached far and challenged our people, and we decided it was better to focus on keeping the 'Heroes' mothership as strong as possible.”

The good news for followers of the show is that they’ll have new online episodes staring July. In addition to that, there’s now a definite date on when Heroes will be returning on air. On Monday, Sept. 15, we'll kick off with a 'Heroes' clip show to try to bring back the audience and [then air] a massive two-hour 'Heroes' film,” said Silverman.

Season 3 is entitled “Villains” and will focus on the antagonists of the show. Sylar, Adam, Angela Petrelli and new antiheroes will be featured as they shake up the protagonists’ worlds.

"We consciously chose to rest [Heroes] this spring so that Tim Kring and his team could get ahead of the creative and build up to a massive event – a three-hour Heroes night," Silverman said.
