Pasadena City College (PCC) gave her first camera, and now her motor home office follows trackside events all over the state, and she even covered the Montreal Olympics where she shot photos of British Princess Anne.
After graduating from Pasadena High School, she went onto the community college, where she photographed horses for practice. Since she was 10 years old, she practically lived at the Eaton Canyon Riding Stables. The horses at the nearby stables served as good subjects for her homework, for which she would take her borrowed camera on the weekends. Her life becomes filled with photography once her first horse photo sold, relegating art, music, and journalism to the back burner.
At a horse show in Santa Barbara she was hired as assistant to two famous equestrian photographers with whom she travelled all over the country for two years, bringing horses in focus at shows, tracks and state fairs. Another famous pair took her on, and they traveled all over California. With help from her mother for the business side of things, she can concentrate on taking shots with her Swedish camera with German lens.
Six-foot jumps and winning a race by the nose are her trademark shots. But for the lady with the camera horses also sit on all 4 hoofs for formal portraits. Some horses can be real camera whores, too. They perk their ears or raise their heads once they realize a camera is trained on them. Other horses can be downright snobs.
A good horse photo takes some doing. The best shots of hunters and jumpers, on the one hand, are those of them mid-air with legs bent at just the right angle. On the other hand, Tennessee walkers look best with their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. While a stock horse is best captured stopping in a slide, a saddle horse is best captured with legs and head held high. A photo of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that aficionados are struggling to save, is one of her best known works. It is best to capture them running. It helps that their riders wear elaborate white ponchos with bridles and saddles.
She has met many a celebrity horse enthusiast through her work. She has even made it to royal circles. After photographing Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics, she found herself standing next to Her Highness, the Queen. She asked Queen Elizabeth if it made her anxious to see her daughter taking high jumps, and the Queen answered in the affirmative. To switch it up a little, she began to photograph fork lifts, even though in her spare time she also swims, back packs, bicycles, pans for gold and sometimes even rides a horse.
It is refreshing that perked ears are not a requirement for good fork lift shots.
