So you get to class excited and wearing your best ballet dancing shoes, only to feel upset when the teacher corrects you and you leave feeling disappointed..
If you are getting Corrections in ballet it is a good thing. It means the teacher thinks you are worth correcting and she/he cares about you.
Sometimes you will be able to take that correction immediately and other times it will take time. If you are given a correction do not be afraid to say if you don’t quite get what the teacher means. All too often we say yes and want to please our teacher but are really thinking ‘I have no idea what they meant’. Either ask them to explain again or at the end of the class approach them and say you are keen to improve and want to understand things better.
Maybe ask for some exercises to help you practice at home. Also straight after class write down the corrections you were given (don’t wait until the next day as you might forget, do it while it is fresh in your mind) This will help you to know what you need to focus on in the following class and the teacher will be pleased you are committed and taking in on board.
One other thing that never helps is if you continue to compare yourself to others. While it is good to look up to others make sure you do not lose focus.
It is a teacher’s job to give corrections and try to help you improve to become a better ballet dancer. If you take corrections well your teacher will feel like she is making a difference and she will want to help you more and more. So don’t forget to smile and thank her for helping!
