Breathing is absolutely vital for our survival.
Any disturbance to breathing definitely lands us in trouble.
Breathing is a process that starts from our birth and ends at our death.
During this process we inhale air which contains about 21 per cent oxygen, our blood gets oxygenated and we exhale carbon dioxide.
The whole process is termed as respiration which gives energy to the body to act.
Respiration is not merely a question of breathing in and out.
It involves every cell of the body in extracting energy from food to meet the demands of the body.
Our brain cells begin to die when this essential ingredient called oxygen is not available.
From where does the atmosphere get oxygen?
Plants absorb carbon dioxide and expel the oxygen as a waste product.
Thus their waste is our life-giving oxygen which we inhale, absorb into our blood stream then exhaled as a waste namely the carbon dioxide.
When we breathe, the air enters the wind pipe otherwise called as trachea through our nose and month.
The wind pipe divides into two tubes, one to each lung and then divides into smaller ducts to carry the air into the lungs.
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place here.
In fact, the breathing is controlled by the brain.
The rate at which we breathe depends on the adjustment to accommodate the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Variations in our breathing speed are created by the activity of the body.
It is possible to change the rate at which we breathe.
We can hold out breath for long period of time also.
It helps in staying within water especially during swimming.
Deep breathing is recommended to relieve stress and tension.
When we are anxious, deep breath will help.
There are many advantages in taking deep breath.
Some people practice yoga to take deep breath and also to hold the breath for impressively long period.
When we mount a hill or climb up steps in stairs, we pant and breathe.
In high altitudes, mountain climbers come across reduced amount of oxygen which creates gasping.
Occasionally they need extra oxygen supply for normal respiration.
It appears that women and children generally breathe more rapidly than men.
It is estimated that we breathe nearly 500 cu ft of air per day effortlessly.
Do we think of it any time?
Invariably we breathe effortlessly and continuously.
Deep breathing by closing one of the nostrils or inhaling air through one of the nostrils and exhaling through the other after retaining the air inside the lungs for a few minutes are practiced to attain certain benefits for the body health.
Asthma is one of the breath related diseases caused by dust and other pollutants.
It creates breathing trouble at any time of the day, mostly during the midnight hours.
Suffocation and noxious gases may also cause breathing trouble and sometimes lead to death.
Taking deep breath as an exercise is possible for everyone, everywhere to feel refreshed.
Then why not we do it everyday for few minutes?
