7/18/08 - RETIRED w/ 30 YEARS OF SERVICE FROM CITY OF DETROIT - DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & WELLNESS PROMOTION - WIC DIVISION (Women, Infant, Children).
As I grow up, I realize that a lot of things are happening to me, mentality, emotional, physically and spiritually. Your body starts going through changes that you didn’t think it would.
Once you turn 50 years old, you can wake-up one morning and your legs are broken, and you just went to bed. I know it sounds funny, but things happen as you progress in life!
When I was growing up, on the east side of Detroit, I did as most youngsters would do, I would play with friends, fall down, scratch up my legs or elbows, cry, then get up the next day and do it all over again. Then when I got in my twenties, I would play with friends (disco-ing, clubing, partying). I would party as if I didn’t have a care in the world, which I really didn’t. I was working, but I really didn’t have much responsibility than that. I wasn’t married, I didn’t have any children, and I lived with my parents. My only problem, at that time, was just trying to get up in the morning to go to work because my head was usually hurting, from the partying.
Then as I got onto my thirties, I had more responsibility in my life! I was married and had gotten divorced by then, I had a young son, I was still working, but things started getting more difficult. My emotions and my physical body started changing on me more.
I found myself upset more, crying more, hurting more from different situations that I was dealing with at that time. If this was a part of growing up, I wasn’t too happy about it! Then I reached the forties. I still was employed, I remarried, my son was getting older and started “smellin’ himself” (as the older folks would say) and my body was really doing things that I actually started thinking that “aliens” took over my body. I would stretch to reach for something, and would hurt for the rest for the day or I would bend down to pick up something, and would feel as though I wouldn’t be able to stand up again.
Now, the fun part is, I am in my 50’s, I’m retired, I still married, my son is grown and I have a grandson now. I find that my body is still changing, I’m gaining weight (which my husband isn’t too pleased about, but he’ll be alright), I had surgery, and now I have reading glasses. But, my emotions and my spirituality has grown, to a good place. I am more relaxed and at peace with my life. I pray more, I attend church more, and I laugh more! So that is when I started to understand that, “Age ain’t nutin’, but a number! It doesn’t matter the age you become or what your physical body might be going through, it only really matters on how you deal with the changes, mentally, emotionally and physically. That's when you are truly growing up!
