Develop a Headline that Sucks in the Reader like a Vacuum
There is one determining factor when a reader decides to take the time to read your article and that is the headline. Powerful headlines get clicks. Weak headlines get skipped over. It’s that simple.
How do most people read a newspaper? They skim the headlines and then come back to the ones that piqued their interest and read the article. It is exactly the same in the internet information world as well.
There seems to be 2 camps of thought when it comes to the attention grabbing part of your article. Some will call it a title and some a headline.
The word “title” is defined by Webster’s Dictionary is a descriptive or general heading (as of a chapter in a book).
Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “headline” as a head of a newspaper story or article usually printed in large type and giving the gist of the story or article that follows
You can use either word your like. Personally, since I am not writing a book I prefer headline.
Headlines need to contain “power words and phrases” in order to capture the attention of a potential reader. I suggest that you run a Google search for the phrase “power words and phrases”. Visit the top ten results and create a text file with any words or phrases you find. You can then access it later when creating your headline.

Another tactic to use in creation a killer headline is to ask a question. This instills curiosity in your readers and they will want to know the answer, it is human nature. You can over use curiosity though. Do not use a question as the headline of every article you write

If you are using keywords in your articles you need to be sure to use them in the headline at least once, preferably in the first 2 to 4 words.
Writing a headline is a craft, but like any craft it is something that you can master if you understand power words and phrases and human nature. Killer headlines will pull prospective readers to your work, poorly conceived headlines will cause your articles, no matter how well written and interesting, to fall into obscurity.
