How to Clean LCD Screens - The Natural Way

Cleaning an LCD screen is not as simple as whipping out a bottle of a typical household cleanser. Why not? LCD stands for liquid crystal display, a high-end technology that's as delicate as it sounds. Here's how to protect your investment:

The Cleaners

Resist the urge to use your favorite all-purpose or glass cleaner. While your old-style TV's glass surface could more easily handle these heavy-duty products, the soft plastic of an LCD requires a gentler product. Cleansers that contain ammonia, ethyl alcohol, and other chemicals can react with the screen, creating a view-ruining yellow haze. Use an LCD screen cleaner instead.

A common method ofcleaning LCD screens is a do-it-yourself solution of isopropyl alcohol and water. Mix equal parts of both ingredients for a safe alternative to regular household cleaners. Don't use tap water in the mix—it contains salts that leave a white residue on the screen. Distilled water is the safest choice for a cleaning solution.

Another option is to invest in a natural LCD cleanser. Made with enzymes and plant-derived extracts, these products remove oils, smudges, and grime without damaging the screen. They're also safe for you and the environment. Look for a natural LCD cleanser that also repels dust with an anti-static barrier.

The Cloths

Paper towels and dirty cloths are a no-no when it comes to cleaning your electronics. Paper towels can be scratchy, and used cloths can have screen-scratching dirt embedded in them. If you're mixing your own cleaner at home, use a clean cloth, like a t-shirt, to apply the isopropyl alcohol-water mix.

Perhaps you're usinga specially designed LCD screen cleaner? If so, apply it with a microfiber cloth. They're designed to work with the cleanser and won't damage the screen. They're also washable and reusable, which means they're more earth-friendly than paper towels.

The Method

Armed with a screen-safe cleaner and a dirt-free cloth, you're ready to battle dust and smudges. To start cleaning an LCD screen, turn off the device. Apply the cleanser to the cloth—never spray cleanser directly onto the screen. Using a gentle, circular motion, rub the cloth over the screen to remove oil and dirt. For stubborn smudges, don't rub harder. Too much pressure can result in an ominous sounding condition called dead pixels, which can trigger partial to complete loss of picture.  Instead, eliminate stubborn smudges by repeating the gentle cleansing process as often as necessary.

When you've finished cleaning LCD screens, wait until they're completely dry before turning them back on.
