Modern day writing allows for much flexibility in the interest of simple and effective communication. This is a refreshing development as it allows for writing that is less starchy, stiff necked or rigid. However, this does not mean that all the rules of good writing, especially in terms of grammar, are to be gaily abandoned. The rules and guidelines still apply but there is room for reasonable flexibility. Is there such a thing as perfect grammar? It very much depends on the writer, the reader and the message. It must also be borne in mind that even great writers have been known to have made grammatical mistakes. Even so, this has not made their writing any less popular.

Good grammar should be viewed as a tool to help us be understood as well as to understand others. However, it is important to remind ourselves that flexibility in the use of grammar has to be approached with due caution. This is because grammar affects meaning. There is a world of difference between "eats, shoots and leaves" and "eats shoots and leaves".

In terms of grammar and flexibility, what are some of the terms that are acceptable? Among others, it is not wrong to:

1. End a sentence with a preposition.
2. Split our infinitives. "They are expected to more than double their fees" is in good order.
3. Start a sentence with "and" or "but."
4. Use the word "Hopefully."
5. Use the term "Healthy Food".
6. To say "none of them are for real" as none may not always be singular.
7. Use the word "like" as a synonym for "because."
8. Use "like" as a conjunction.
9. To use the word "ain't" but avoid using it in formal writing.

In applying flexibility, especially in writing, good sense and prudence should prevail. Factors that must be taken into consideration include the type of document being prepared, the target audience and the most effective as well as appropriate manner in which the message can be conveyed. In instances, where requirements are specified, it is best to adhere to them. It is essential to remind ourselves that grammar is only one of the elements that is important for writing. The others include spelling, correct use of adjectives and verbs, good overall flow and logic. These need to be checked and re-checked. For this purpose, a good Dictionary and Thesaurus would be most helpful. A more convenient and practical alternative is to use a good better writing software.
