Find a Plumber by Postcode web service reports record hits during Big Freeze

Posted: Jan 20, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Unprecedented numbers of consumers have been visiting the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering website to search for a Registered Plumber or Heating Professional. www.ciphe.org.uk

During the ‘big freeze' hits on the website were up 100% on the same period last year, peaking at a rise of 225% after CIPHE Chief Executive Blane Judd was interviewed by BBC 24 and regional radio stations. On Christmas day a record 700% more people used the ‘find a registered professional' web based service.

At the same time applications to register with the Institute have also increased as professional installers respond to an increasing awareness amongst the public to ask for proof of competency. Recent high profile prosecutions of unscrupulous ‘cowboys' have also contributed to heightened public awareness.

But it's not just consumers who have recognised the benefits of always choosing a registered profession to carry out work in their home. Severn Trent is the first water company to point its customers to the CIPHE ‘find a registered professional by postcode service via full page advertisements in regional media.

Severn Trent joins Thames Water and Southern Water as an Industry supporter of the CIPHE. They recognise the important role that plumbing and heating professionals have to play in advising the consumer and  want to work with Registered Plumbers and Registered Heating Professionals in their areas to supply and fit water efficient devices.

During 2011 the Institute's Industrial Associates who support the work of the Institute and include Grundfos, Worcester Bosch, Ideal Standard, Fernox and Honeywell in addition to the water companies, will be putting information in their customers literature encouraging customers to ‘Get it Right Get a Professional' encouraging consumers to choose only Registered Plumbers or Registered Heating Professionals to carry out work in their homes.

Commented Blane Judd: "The public are beginning to realise that unqualified plumbing and heating installers can cause serious damage to their property or even their life.   During times of emergency such as burst pipes, consumers are vulnerable, but by using the ‘find a professional' postcode search facility on our website they can be confident that the plumber they call out will be fully qualified and is also bound by our code of conduct.

" I fully expect other water companies to follow the lead of Thames, Severn and Southern, working towards ensuring that consumers are better informed  by professionals who have the technical knowledge and practical expertise required to give best practice advice and carry out safe, professional installations.

"By always asking to see proof of Registered Professional status through CIPHE consumers can be confident that the man or woman they engage to carry out work in their home with skill and integrity. And in the unlikely event that something does go wrong the Institute will investigate and sanction if necessary as part of the code of conduct."
