Steel Hinges: More Than Meets the Eye

All doors are hung with some type of hinge. The style depends on the location and function of the door. An interior closet door in a home does not need the same type of hinge as a door in a correctional facility. Regardless of the type of hinge needed, a quality hinge will provide long-lasting usage.

Steel is one of the most common materials for hinges since it is exceptionally durable. Some of the most common types of hinges available in steel include: butt hinges, spring hinges, continuous hinges, various utility hinges, and prison hinges.

Butt hinges may be used on any type of interior or exterior door. These are the basic door hinge most people are familiar with. When selecting a butt hinge, consider the weight of the door and the level of usage. You'll find products rated from standard to heavy duty and with two, three or five knuckles.

Spring hinges allow a door to close automatically. This type of hinge is common for interior doors of hospitals, schools, hotels and other commercial buildings. They are a less expensive alternative to an automatic door closer.

A steel barrel continuous hinge is a sturdy choice for doors that get a lot of usage. These hinges distribute door weight and stress along the full length of door and frame, thus preventing misaligned pivot points of individual hinges.

Steel utility hinges are available for cabinets, drawers, lockers and other office and warehouse furnishings. Prison hinges provide extra heavy duty function with some designs handling doors up to 2000 pounds. This type of hinge is also useful for hospital x-ray room doors.

Stanley steel hinges are some of the finest available. You can use their Web site, http://www.stanleyhardware.com, to help determine which hinge is the best one for your application.
