Structuring the Workload of Your Business
There is much to think about when starting your own business. From choosing what service or product you will sell to obtaining the working capital you need to get started, so many things need your attention. One of the decisions you must make is how much of the day-to-day operations you will be involved in. There are usually three ways to divide the workload. First, you can do everything yourself, hands-on. Another choice is to hire employees which you will actively manage daily. Finally, you may simply hire employees to do the majority of the work necessary to run this business, and you stay mainly hands off.
The first alternative you have is to run the business on your own. For a small business that is doing something independent like sales or producing single creative items, this is a viable option. Any business where you can work at your own pace according to your own schedule can handle this.
Another option that you can choose when it comes to sharing the workload is hiring employees that will work directly under your active management. For example, if you sell food from a concession trailer, you may choose to hire a couple of people to help with the day-to-day operations such as cooking, and receiving money. This type of business can be a very fast-paced working environment, and sometimes it helps to have an extra pair or two of hands.
Finally, when you set up your business, you may choose to hire someone to manage the business for you. This person might be in charge of hiring and firing employees, product decisions, inventory management, etc. In this case, you would take a more hands-off approach, only being consulted when necessary.
The way you choose to run your business is entirely up to you. Sometimes circumstances dictate exactly how and when you structure your company. If you are working on a shoestring budget, you may be forced to work the business until you make enough money to expand the business enough to hire employees. Sometimes, you cannot immediately afford to hire a manager talented enough to let you have a hands-off approach to business. The type of structure you choose does not have to be permanent.
