The Courage To Start Your Own Business

Many people talk about starting their own business. For most it is a dream and as the years slip by the time never seems quite right.

Sometimes it is the inspiration that is lacking; what business, where, how and who with?

The current economic climate though is having an effect. Increasing amounts of redundancies are forcing people to look at alternative forms of income. For many the prospect of existing on benefit payments is not an option so they are choosing to help themselves.

Redundancy cheques can be used to start a new life but the fear remains. Few of us embrace change, so the fear of ‘going it alone’ holds us back.

Help though is available. A network of agencies and organisations exist to help people on their way and then support them as they grow.

The most important organisation is Business Link. Business Link is a government funded service whose objective is to support enterprise – full stop!

Companies just starting up and businesses that have been operating for less than a year can qualify for an e-voucher scheme that can be used to buy consultancy services locally such as accountancy, legal or sales and marketing.

Companies that have been operating for more than a year can access free support, one to one support direct from a Business Link adviser. These advisers will analyse your business and produce customised plans of action. Ongoing implementation support is standard and practical assistance also extends to sticky areas like IT or Tax.

Business Link can also help identify grants that your business may be eligible for, such as those offered by central and local government and private organisations. Some schemes offer financial support and others valuable advice or practical help.

The Business Link website is a valuable resource that will help you to identify sources of support available both locally and nationally.

Of huge benefit are the wide range of free workshops and seminars hosted by Business Link. Workshops are well organised, friendly and hugely practical. Subjects covered range from inspiration to filling out HM Revenue and Customs forms.

There has never been a better time to start your own business. Be your own boss and enjoy the freedom and flexibility that it brings. Leave the politics behind. Concentrate on a company that is yours and yours alone. Build it for the benefit of your family and the future can be bright.

Information can be sourced from the Business Link website www.businesslink.gov.uk/east or call 08457 17 16 15.
