Later Sun and Moon discovered this and thus became enemies of ‘Swarbhanu' because they asked gods to take action against ‘Swarbhanu' because he sat in ‘Devas' line to acquire nectar. On being asked by other gods to severe ‘Swarbhanu' head, Lord Vishnu did it, but by that time Rahu had taken the nectar and became immortal. The severed head was joined to the body of serpant and he became Rahu. ‘Swarbhanu' got the status of planet as Rahu and his lower part or counterpart of Ketu. That's why ‘Ketu' is always seventh from ‘Rahu'.
‘Vedas' and ‘Puranas' lays down that snakes evolved from mating of ‘Sage Kashyap' and his wife ‘Kadru'. Father of astrology Sage ‘Prashar' have discussed about this yog in his work alongwith the concept being discussed in ‘Saravali' and ‘Mansagri' also. It is said that snake age is of 120 years. Myths lays down that snake should not be killed and when new building foundation is laid down then snake should be worshiped and a silver snake to be left under the foundation.
Kaal Sarp yog is formed when all the planets come between Rahu and Ketu on one side. There are twelve types of Kaal Sarp yog. But practically 3,456 types are there which are constituted because in every ascendant its effects are different. ‘Kaal' means Death. If any other yog is not strong in horoscope then child dies immediately on taking birth, if survives then suffers death like conditions. When the Sun and Moon comes near these nodes at the time of full Moon or the new Moon, an eclipse of the Moon or Sun takes place. Then the vibrations coming from these two are cut off. The persons born during this period are prone to mental abnormality and other physical sufferings. They can have weak constitution and other disabilities. During eclipse period the normal functioning of human body is disturbed, that's why people avoid intake of food.
Rahu and Ketu always move clockwise while other planets move in anti-clockwise direction. In formation of this yog there is no place for Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. If some planet is left out then ‘Anshik Kaalsarp yog' (partial) takes place. In Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra ascendants, this yog gives more sufferings. If Rahu is laying eight from Sun then partial Kaalsarp yog takes place. Similarly when from Moon, Rahu and Ketu lies eight then also partial Kaalsarp yog occurs. Rahu position in sixth, eighth and twelfth also causes the same effect. If in a horoscope favorable planets are inflicted by Rahu or Rahu is inflicted by bad planets then native faces problems in the period of Rahu.
To nullify its effects proper ‘Poojaarchna' (prayers) should be done. This can be done by a qualified priest only. Remedies of ‘Lal Kitab' can also be applied to nullify this yog. The process should take place at prescribed places only so that maximum benefit can be derived. Kaalsarp yog is associated with Lord Shiva because he is the deity of "Kaal". The twelve places which are mentioned are :- ‘Shri Somnath' (Sourashtra), ‘Shri Mallikarjun' (Shri Shalam), ‘Shri Mahakaleshwar' (Ujjain), ‘Shri Amleshwar' (Omkareshwar), ‘Shri Vaidyanath' (Jharrkhand), ‘Shri Bhimshankar' (Maharashtra), ‘Shri Rameshwaram' (Tamil Nadu), ‘Shri Nageshwar' (Darukavan), ‘Shri Vishwanath' (Varanasi), ‘Shri Kedarnath' (Himalaya), ‘Shri Ghushmeshwar' (Ellora), ‘Shri Tryabakeshwar' (Nasik).
This yog is also diagnosed by studying the dreams.
