Mars is called ‘Hatyara' (Killer) in astrological texts because it is blunt and fiery in nature. Due to this nature most discussed Manglik or Kuja Yoga is formed by its position in certain houses of a horoscope.
Manglik or Kuja dosha is a most dreaded word in Indian context. When a child is born especially a girl with this dosha then parents start thinking of all the hurdles they will face in finding a suitable boy for their darling.
This dosha is formed when planet Mars is situated in first, fourth, seventh, eight and twelfth house of a Kundli (horoscope). Similarly Manglik or Kuja dosha is formed when the above mentioned conditions occur from Moon sign also. This red planet has four aspects – first, fourth, seventh and eight by which it inflicts its influence on the aspected houses. By its presence and aspects it causes Manglik or Kuja dosha. In South India presence of Mars in second house is also considered bad because second house is of family and Mars presence in this house destroys the significance of this house and causes marriage discord. By its seventh aspect it damages eight house also.
Before going further let us analyze the houses and aspects of planet Mars. When Mars sits in the first house it affects health of the native by its position, damages fourth house results of comforts and vehicles by its fourth aspect. By its seventh and eight aspects it inflicts harm to the life of spouse because seventh house represents spouse and eight longevity of the spouse. When it is positioned in fourth house it aspects seventh house thus destroying the results of fourth and seventh house. Its position in seventh house and eight houses is the worst position because this directly damages the house of spouse and longevity. Position of Mars in twelfth house destroys the comforts of bed which is signified by the twelfth house. It also aspects seventh house from this position by its eight aspect.
The above facts are to be kept in mind while matching horoscopes of boy and girl. It is said that if some other malefic planet like Rahu and Saturn is posited in the above mentioned houses then Manglik or Kuja dosha is reduced. Some people say that if Mars is posited in its own signs (Aries and Scorpio) in these houses then this dosha does not take place. Some disagree to this because it only indicates strength and not any other thing. But if Mars is lord of some malefic house like in Virgo ascendant (being eighth lord) then it causes maximum damage. In Cancer and Leo ascendants, Mars is a ‘Yogkarka' (benefic), therefore its position in the specified houses is debatable.
According to great astrologer Dr. B.V Raman, if Mars is in benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus and Mercury) signs in certain houses, then this does not causes Manglik or Kuja dosha. Some say that if one attains the age of 28, which is the maturity age of planet Mars, and marries then this dosha is nullified. In both these cases dosha is reduced but not completely nullified. It is better that both boy and girl are Manglik. But caution should be practiced and if both horoscopes depict Mars position in same house then marriage should be avoided because this will not nullify the yoga but increase its malefic effect. For example if both boy and girl horoscope has Mars in seventh house then avoid getting them married.
