When You Start to Teach Your Child to Read You Need to Learn How to Teach PhonicsPhonics are very easy to learn, they are nothing to be intimidated about. We use phonic sounds every time we speak. When teaching phonics we have to match the phonic sound we say with the written phonic sound. It is that simple. When you are learning how to teach phonics you will need a phonic chart so you can work out the phonic written sounds and how to say them. If Your Kid is Getting Left Behind in Writing Then You Need to Know How to Teach Kids to WriteEven though the pencil looks like it is going the way of the dinosaur we parents need to know how to teach kids to write. Anyway we learnt to write many years now it is our turn to be teachers. If your kid is having problems with writing it could be as simple as a weak hand. And a few hand exercises will possible cure it. But if you are not so lucky then you need to try a different approach. American Homeschooling Has Been Around Since We Trekked Across the ContinentHomeschooling in America is making a big comeback with all the problems that seem to stem from the education system. What people in American don’t seem to realize is this country was made by homeschooling. It was one of the few times in America when most children could read and write and they were taught in covered wagons trekking into the wilderness. The History of Teaching Reading is not Very OldWhen America was first colonized it was mother and father teaching the kids in a sort of homeschooling setup. Schools have been around for a long time but they were mainly for the wealthy and elites of society. In the history of teaching reading there was a very big step about 100 years ago when Maria Montessori started teaching learning and mentally disabled children in Italy. After You Have Been Reading Aloud to Your Child it is Time to Start Guided ReadinGuided Reading is when the children can read by themselves. With guided reading always start with something easy to read to help build confidence. Usually your child should be able to understand about 90% of the book. It is better to start with picture books so your child can look at the pictures to get the words. Now this is where phonics comes in. If your child can read the word phonetically then she will hear the word. With the Pencil Going the Way of the Dinosaur You Still Need to Know How to Teach Your Child to WriteNowadays most schools let children print in block letters like the keys on a keyboard instead of teaching writing as in continuous cursive. Probably a lot of parents cannot see any benefit in teaching writing as their children spend more time on a keyboard than with a pen and notepad. With the influx of modern technology in the classroom and university it would seem that writing is going extinct. Is Writing Going the Way of the DinosaurSome parents debate whether learning to write is necessary as all around them they see computers and keyboards. I sometimes wonder myself as I was brought up on a notepad and pencil and all around me kids are using computers. As a school teacher I still use the blackboard and chalk, but most of the young, new teachers use the computer and power point presentations. How Constant Repetition Can Turn You Into a GeniusI think a similar approach is how we learn reading. When I was a kid I think the Nuns taught me synthetic phonics at school, as that was in vogue at that time. And because we didn’t have as many distractions as the kids of today, we implanted reading in our long-term memory. We did this by reading and more reading. To Learn to Read Your Child Has to Learn PhonicsLearning phonics is time consuming but it is something your child has to do to be able to read properly. Phonics are the foundation of reading and without them your child will have problems when learning to read. On the internet and in the bookshops there are many ways to learn to read. Learning to Write is Something All Children Have to Do Even Thought the Pencil is Being Replaced by a KeyboardLearning to write is a part of growing up. We start off by scribbling and doodling and this helps us to get used to holding a pencil. Most young kids are fascinated by just being able to make a mark on a piece of paper.
