Miami Schools Expands and Prepares for the 2006-2007 School YearThis school year Miami Schools is opening four new schools and several new facilities to cope with increased student enrollment for the 2006-2007 school year. The new schools will cater to elementary, middle and high school students. Long Island Schools Rethink Gym CreditTeachers, students, and parents at Long Island schools have been struggling with how to give credit for physical education classes. On the one hand, many argue that counting gym like an academic class can badly affect the GPA of students who are strong academically but do not do well in gym. Las Vegas Schools Prosper This SummerThis past August, leaders from the Las Vegas Schools gathered at the Cashman Theatre for "A Celebration of Progress." This was a celebration to mark the opening of nine new schools and one replacement school in the Las Vegas School System. In attendance were officials from Las Vegas Schools, Nevada State officials, community leaders, school principals, and architects. Las Vegas Schools' "A Celebration of Progress" was hosted by entertainer Clint Holmes. Indianapolis Sees Success Involving FathersSuperintendent Eugene G. White's call to fathers in the Indianapolis schools has met with strong success. Mr. White asked fathers to bring their children to the first day of classes in order to establish a stronger presence on campus and hopefully continue to stay involved with Indianapolis schools throughout the school year. Technology Initiative in Detroit Public SchoolsThe Detroit Board of Education revealed four new key partners in the ongoing technical development of Detroit schools. These partners will work together with Detroit schools for the next five years to improve the quality and access to technology throughout the area. Columbus Schools' Innovative Partnership Programs Continue to SucceedThe Columbus Schools' partnership programs will continue into the 2006-2007 school year. These programs are conducted jointly with Columbus Schools and local and state universities, colleges, academic organizations, community organizations and area volunteers. The programs are wide ranging and cover lots of different subjects and grade levels. Cleveland Opens Five New Schools for 2006 - 2007Three Cleveland schools received complete and comprehensive renovations. These schools will appear completely different to returning students and take learning in Cleveland to a new and modern level. These schools include Mary B. Martin at 8200 Brookline Avenue, Mary Bethune at 11815 Moulton Avenue, and John Hay at 2075 Stoke Boulevard. Cincinnati Schools Establishes Programs That Unite Educators and the CommunityThis summer saw the creation of the Cincinnati Schools ' Parent Leadership Institute. The program reflects the changing role that parents play in public education. As Vanessa White, the Board President of the Parents for Public Schools (PPS) stated: "The days of bake sales are long gone. International Baccalurette Programs Heat Up CharlotteThe science program at Davidson IB Middle, one of the schools in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg area, has been recognized as a School of Distinction by Intel and Scholastic. Intel, the world renowned computer chip maker, and Scholastic, a leader in textbooks and educational materials, chose Davidson for honors in the field of science achievement, bringing both pride and bragging rights to Charlotte schools. Atlanta Schools' Public Engagement PartnershipsThe Atlanta Schools' Office of Public Engagement is responsible for creating and fostering partnerships between Atlanta Schools, community volunteers, teachers, parents, national and local corporations, non-profit groups, and civic organizations in order to advance student achievement. The Office of Public Engagement was created as part of the ongoing educational reform that is occurring throughout the Atlanta Schools.
