Alan Jackson - Articles

I was watching a video by this crazy sales and marketing guy Mike Litman. I was looking for ideas. And he asked his audience a question. Tell me about your story? I never really thought about my story before. I thought I was just like everybody else. But what happened was he insisted on writing this down. No kidding the video said write it down, no one else was at home, it was a compelling idea, so I did.At 18 I had started a career in the defense force. I was going to be an officer, but more importantly my parents did not have the burden of paying tuition. All sounds good, but early on I was involved in a horrific accident that led me to 365 days in a military hospital. My new defense friends were told not to visit me, they were soon to be officers and officers do not associate with failures. I was discharged as not being medically fit. My tuition was over, and no qualifications.
I felt totally alone, totally unworthy. I spent 4 years moving from state to state, doing odd jobs, drinking way too much, and feeling pretty sorry for myself. Nothing seemed to matter and I didn’t even care!
Then I heard it. The Richest Man In Babylon came on the radio. Stop the presses. A 1955 book by George S Clason using the secrets of the ancients. Whoa! Somehow I was tuned to the short stories. Our thinking can be no wiser than our understanding. I was beginning to understand.
I raced out and got the book, wore it out and got a new copy. This was practical, and gave me principles to apply to my life. I now valued money, but more importantly I began to value myself. I employed the principles that it advocated.
I finally attained professional qualifications and a real job. I married an enchanting lady and together we created a a million dollar portfolio and a great lifestyle for my family. Things could not get better, right? Well the job disappeared. It was not my fault is was the economic downturn don’t you know. And the debts kept mounting. How do you maintain the lifestyle you want for you and your family? How do I save for work retirement when no money is coming in? How do you live?
Who would have thought that I would still use these same Richest Man in Babylon principles over 15 years later. I appreciate the value of money and the value of my time. I still had a desire, a desire I think we all share, to create an income for now and the future that works while I am asleep. But now it was more than a desire, is was absolutely necessary.
