Artie Megibben - ArticlesEcologically friendly New Year’s ResolutionsWe’ve all made them. New Year resolutions. We swear off of sweets, alcohol, caffeine and bad relationships. We promise to exercise more, eat less and be all-around better people. And every now and then, one of these resolutions actually stick. We run that marathon. Wool, Flannel and Other Energy-saving ResourcesWhen winter blows into town, we instinctively know we need to bundle up before we head outside. We put on our coats, gloves, throw on a scarf and don our various hats, caps, berets and woolen chapeaus. But when we get back home, most of us peel off the layers, crank up the thermostat and live like it is spring indoors. The problem with relying solely on our electric heaters, fireplaces and radiators to keep us warm is obvious. The Global Warming Debate Heats UpThe topic of global warming is, at once, scientific, economic, technological and political. And it is always a topic that creates plenty of its own heat. The folks on the political right won’t even use the term. For them, the topic is climate change. Yes, the planet is getting warmer, but it is also getting cooler. The earth’s climate is unpredictable, so pack a sweater and flip flops. No worries. Drive better electricallyThe same energy source that lights up your living room, amps up your microwave, burns up your toast and executes convicted felons in Alabama is about to fuel up your automobile. Every forward-looking carmaker has either one in their pipeline, in concept or on the drawing board. But the electric car is actually an old idea. Staying Safe and CozyNothing feels better on a cold winter’s day than peeling off frosty winter gloves, soggy socks and snuggling up to a roaring fire. But these days, the warmth of the family hearth is likely to be an electric space heater or a digital thermostat. Harvesting Wind PowerFarm after farm has been added to the American landscape in the last year alone. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, nearly every state has witnessed their scorching-fast growth. But these farms don’t harvest corn or soybeans, they harvest wind power. In 2008, wind farms grew a record 50% and right now, Texas is already the top wind-producing state, passing up California and Iowa. The Lone Star State boasts more than 2,000 wind turbines churning out 2,768 megawatts of power. Nuclear Power: Friend or Foe?You hear the word “nuclear” and all sorts of things come to mind––none of them good. Rogue nations enriching uranium to wipe out half the map…solid citizens carrying placards and chanting “No nukes!” as a radioactive generators threaten to be built in their families’ backyards …presidential candidates trying extra hard not to mispronounce that tricky word as “nucular.” Savings in MotionTired of having to be the family energy cop? You know, the one who has to go around switching off the lights that others leave on? TVs that no one are watching? Well, here’s your chance to put your energy police badge back in its box and retire from the force. Recycling. What does it really accomplish? It used to be, trash was trash. Garbage was garbage. Life was simple. But all that has changed. The average home is now encouraged to practice refuse profiling. Before you toss something, you have to stop and think…is this garbage, recyclable or compost? It’s enough to make your head hurt. But the question is, does all this recycling business actually help the planet? Lower Your Holiday Energy BillThe holidays are a great time for family get-togethers and opening gifts. However, the holidays can be the worse possible time to open your energy bills. Few seasons use up energy and drive up energy costs like the Christmas season. It is a time of good cheer and homes lit up like Christmas trees. Not to mention, neighborhood decorating competitions and Christmas trees lit up like…well…Christmas trees.
