As soon as I was old enough to know my ABC's I was writing. I explain it to people as though I didn’t choose writing, it chose me. As an adolescent, I kept a journal full of poetry and short stories that consistently tempted my imagination. Throughout middle school and high school, I worked for the school yearbook, published my poetry in newsletters, school journals, school texts while earning a 4.0 average, which still holds true now, through my college years (http://spot.pcc.edu/~mdembrow/Miyazaki.htm ).
After graduating from high school, I attended Portland Community College to work on my AS degree. Soon after, I transferred my credits to Excelsior University in New York and graduated from there with an AS degree. I am currently attending classes as Portland State University and sending my credits to Excelsior University. I am close to hanging my new BS degree on my wall of achievements. Most of my courses are geared toward professional writing and professional journalism.
In my beginning years of college, I worked extensively with domestic and exotic animals in animal hospitals, the Portland Zoo, and local shelters. I have since started writing freelance articles for local newspapers including the Portland Observer, the Sentinel, and the Hollywood Star (see the "sample work" page of this site).
I also spend a large amount of time working for multi-level marketing, criminal, and general practice attorneys in downtown Portland. There I learned legal applications, marketing, and event coordination. It didn’t take long for the principal attorney at the firm, Jeffrey Babener ( www.mlmlegal.com ), to learn of my writing and computer skills and to find ways to make use of them in the office. Realizing that my skills were worth more than I thought led to my decision to become self-employed as a Freelance Writer and Journalist.
In my college courses, I excelled so well in writing and computer courses that it only confirmed my business-based decision. I wrote large research papers, advanced in creative writing, became educated on running a small business, and even learned the applications of html. The website you are viewing right now is one that I have designed, produced and maintain. Therefore, if you find any links that do not work please contact me.
Another spark in inspiration occurred when I met my mentor, Dave Austin, who has worked for the Oregonian for over 20 years. He invited me to travel beside him to write a story for the Oregonian. He gave me a glimpse into a world that I knew I wanted to be a part of. Interviewing people, writing articles and photographing events is still one my biggest passions.
I enjoy working for myself and writing effective copy for a variety of businesses. It gives me pleasure to be a part of making organizations more productive in their business ventures through my writing. My goals are to simply create professional, coherent documents that will help to make my clients’ lives easier while I continue to work on my degrees while enjoying my life and family.
Lastly, I am currently offering corporate writing work to companies online or locally. For confidentiality reasons, I do not post business samples online. So feel assured that I will not disrespect your company's confidentiality concerns. I will provide you with further information upon your request.
Till then, work hard and most importantly, work smart.
