Debra L. Morrison - Articles

I feast on knowledge and adventure and espouse ultra high energy—some say the Energizer Bunny gets it’s inspiration from me.

I choose friends for the long haul, am perfectionistic yet have a keen ability to see the 30,000 ft view. I am living large, which I define as working hard and playing all out grounded in my rich spirituality and (thankfully) a healthy body. I choose to use my power to empower those less fortunate, both in the US and abroad—visit my website, www.msmorrisonspeaks.com for the latest list of charities I passionately support.

I am jazzed to use and own great tools that work dependably and am not afraid to spend money to save time and improve efficiency. I hate waste of any kind.

I am a flexible and spontaneous self-starter; thriving on seeing, and acting on, new possibilities. I enjoy listening to, and helping people and am passionate about inspiring people to dream and motivating them to take the first step towards achievement. I sometimes don’t take adequate time to celebrate victories, driven to catch the next brass ring—mine and others’; engaging them to consider stretching beyond their current thresholds.

I love sharing jokes that elicit hearty belly laughter yet also enjoy a quick wit and dry sense of humor. I love to surprise people, and keep a cool head in emergencies.

My favorite bumper sticker: She Who Laughs, Lasts.
My favorite food: Rare organic porterhouse steak
My favorite dessert: Strawberry pie
My favorite car: BMW
My favorite movie: Julia
My favorite book: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway
My favorite wine: Shiraz
My favorite beer: Black-and-Tan
My favorite destinations: Hawaii, Ephesus, Peru
I want to travel to: Australia, Belize, and Italy

Recently I’ve loved reading: Banker to the Poor, The Woman’s Field Guide to Exceptional Living, The Soul of Money, The Mastery of Love, Rules for Renegades, The Art of Aging, and What Happy People Know.

I am ambitious—growing up on a farm instilled that—and socially an extrovert, yet enjoy solitude.

I enjoy problem-solving, crap detecting, being efficient, multi-tasking, doing the impossible, going the extra mile and championing the causes of the oppressed. I love to get exceptions and to be the exception.

I work equally well in silence or with classical music playing.

While I enjoy fine candlelit dining with a great bottle of red, preferably in front of a roaring fireplace or oceanfront, I also enjoy nature and camping and hiking.

I love to golf because of the myriad mental challenges. It’s a great FUN outlet for me and one facet of my life that I don’t hold myself to unrealistic standards cause I don’t practice enough for that.

I am great with babies and toddlers and generally love playing with kids for several hours, and then I love to give them back to their parents—far too much responsibility for me, thanks! I relish family reunions and singing—melody and harmony—and story telling and then hugs all around.

While I do not need instant gratification, I am rejuvenated by results, and prefer to surround myself with people far smarter and more experienced.

I am rejuvenated by extra sleep—heck, sleep—and the support and love of good friends.

My two biggest assets: Time and Health

Yes To Limiting Top Executives Compensation

I was particularly encouraged by the top executive compensation limits set forth in the Stimulus Plan, yet dismayed when they were eliminated or watered down. The Stimulus Plan passed by a 246-183 and a 60-38 margin in the House and Senate respectively. Although Republicans Collins, Spechter and Snow all were instrumental in hammering out several compromises, nary a House Republican cast a FOR vote; some predicting ruin if it passed. Index-Like Investing

Warren Buffet was quoted over the weekend saying the economy is in shambles and that it will last for the rest of this year. Not sure that’s news, yet it’s surely captured headlines. In fact, Buffett may have needed (he surely wanted) to refocus some of the VERY negative spot light on him, given that his investments, including Berkshire Hathaway suffered the worst year in it’s history, by a VERY large margin. Don’t get me wrong, I like Warren Buffet, yet I’m NOT sure this is a... Read: Index-Like Investing Read

Don'T Get Duped By High Yield Bonds

As much of the nation's focus is on the soon-to-be-passed Stimulus Bill, and the tragic Buffalo plane crash, there's other news that bears notice. This week, corporations have rushed to take advantage of the opportunity to raise capital, in order to pay down their spiraling debts. They've done so by creating a raft of new high yield, low-rated bonds. Read: Don'T Get Duped By High Yield Bonds Read

    Pigs Get Fatter

Alex Rodriguez's admission to steroid use from 2001-2003 yesterday was the latest example of tarnish and cheating and lying. Young? Not too young to cash the big checks! Stupid, yes, I'll readily agree. Greedy? Read: Pigs Get Fatter Read

    Speaking Of Hogs

I also read yesterday that one in five Americans aged 18-34 is obese! Yes, I have noticed the spread widening on Americans as we sidle up to yet our next buffet or super-sized fast food meal. Read: Speaking Of Hogs Read

If Barack Can, We (too) Can Do it Women!

If Barack Obama can defy the terrific odds of being raised by his grandmother instead of a nuclear family, graduate Harvard magna cum laude, become a community organizer in Chicago in 1985, serve Illinois as their Jr. Senator from 1996-2004, win their US Senate seat from 2005-2008, and ultimately win the prize of the United States of America's first black President, then we women can surely push past our resistance to learning about our money. Risk/reward, not Rewards, Rewards, Rewards

    Unpacking Barack Obama's Speech

Well I won't totally unpack the entire speech here, since I've written an entire article about it. Yet I will say that I believe the reason that the media jumped on the bandwagon almost immediately attesting that it wasn't a Home Run speech was that it contained a lot of references to lowly slaves, especially at the beginning and first half, and yes, I'm suggesting that perhaps some latent racism had a hard time celebrating the truth about the horrors that America's slaves endured. Inauguration Provided Much Needed Pain Relief

We had managed to obstruct the healthy circulation of money in our banking systems and on Wall Street. We had also managed to obstruct the healthy circulation of truth and honor in our government such that we were as a nation suffering from VERY poor circulation indeed. Our collective organs were suffering and our muscles weakened. Read: Inauguration Provided Much Needed Pain Relief Read
