Dr David Black is a Melbourne chiropractor in private practice. After 25 years as a pharmacist, he went back to study in 1980 as a mature aged student and has now practiced chiropractic for 25 years. He is passionate about patient education and giving people the tools to help themselves. David has a broad overview of health issues which derive from his experience in two professions. He believes in the concept of the body being able to heal itself and that healing process being assisted by chiropractic adjustments. He takes time to explain this philosophy to his patients and they come to understand the importance of having regular chiropractic treatment. David participates in ongoing chiropractic education and is a regular attendee at seminars given by leading educators and researchers in the medical field. He is able to present the latest information to his patients and uses the techniques best suited to their individual needs. David looks back over 50 years of practice in the health professions, firstly in pharmacy and later in chiropractic. He remembers the times that his clients believed that all healing could come out of a bottle of medicine. Nowadays people are more educated and discerning and understand that nature intended the body to heal itself and that by removing the obstacles that people place in the way of their healing, they can achieve optimum health. This concept, he says, exactly fits the chiropractic paradigm of removing nerve interference which then allows the body to function at its optimal potential.

The human body is a marvellous machine that has the ability to do minor repairs to itself. When all of these internal adjustments have been made and the body feels that it is still out of alignment, it send messages of pain and discomfort to the brain so that we know that we had better do something about it before it gets worse. That's when you want the sort of doctor that understands what those calls really mean...a Doctor of Chiropractic.

It would seem that they quickly become despondent after being in the dating game for a while. What is wrong with the male population? Where are all the eligible single men? Generally the young ladies are personable, hold good jobs, are well spoken and well dressed. One would think that it would be easy to match up with a suitable male, but it evidently is not easy at all.

When we think of a nice person we see a person who is pleasant. The words agreeable , helpful, understanding and reliable come to mind. In today's fast and often selfish society it is unusual to find someone who is actually nice. Let us put together a few things that a nice person would do and that we might also like to do if we could.

From the time that a child learns how to walk, he or she is rewarded for being a good boy or girl by giving them a chocolate frog or other shaped bar. No one seems to say that this child is being introduced to the dark world of chocolate addiction and no one would think that they are breaking the law in doing so.

As a practicing chiropractor, I see many patients who regularly attend yoga or pilates classes. Both groups of patients seem to derive benefit from their classes yet the philosophy of both is quite different. One seems to have a physical base for instruction while the other seems to have a spiritual base as its origin. Anyone would benefit from either discipline but they do have different purposes and do not accomplish the same things.

Most doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapists will tell you that they have patients who seem to be hooked on or addicted to their physical activities. How many times have I been asked by some patients who have hurt their low backs and can hardly walk to the bathroom, when they can start running again? It seems that they feel genuinely deprived when they have to stop running. Just like some people become addicted to alcohol, tobacco or drugs, the runner or jogger also becomes addicted.

It often happens when you least expect it, you bend and twang! Something moves in your back and you get a knife like pain. you hope it goes away but it gets worse until your day is written off. You have ice packs, what bags, hot water bottles ...but you're unsure what to put on which injury, when it is best used and how long to leave it there. Eveyone tells you something else until you get a headache from all the dogooders to add to your back pain!

Shoulder pain is a very common problem that is seen daily in chiropractic practices. I have patients who come in to my offices and complain about their painful and stiff shoulder. By this they usually mean that their upper trapezius muscles are tight and painful and that they have restricted movement and pain in the region of the upper thoracic spine where it meets the cervical spine at the neck. If the problem does not lie in the spine, it may be due to a rotator cuff muscle tear or imbalance.

When I use the phrase learn a language, I do not necessarily mean that you should become fluent in it. Most people will not find themselves needing to conduct complex business activities or legal matters in another language that they scarcely know. Language shared by you with a stranger instantly breaks down barriers that may be based on distance, customs and nationality. Most people in the world are multilingual, and everybody could be; no one is rigorously excluded from another's language.

Being tired can creep up on you slow slowly, you don't even realise it's different from how you used to feel. It's easily explained away by your age, your stress and your not very healthy diet. You may not think you have a problem but all medical illness must be ruled out before giving helpful advice. Expect to have an energetic day without falling asleep and take active steps to rectify things if this is not a picture you recognise. Life is not a dress rehearsal; this is the main show - enjoy!
