Dr. Maguire has spent over 20 years in research and development as a professor of neuroscience and ophthalmology at the UCSD School of Medicine where he was awarded an NIH Fogarty Fellowship and ran an NIH- and NSF-grant supported research laboratory. Dr. Maguire holds numerous patents for drugs and devices, has over 100 publications in the areas of neuroscience, ophthalmology, cancer, and pharmaceuticals, is a founder and director of two biotechnology companies and two non-profit life science organizations, and has led the implementation of several large BD contracts between biotech and big pharma companies. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of several health care companies and routinely lectures around the world on health care and pharmaceutical related issues. He is Co-Founder and CEO of BioRegenerative Sciences, Inc. (www.bioregenerativesciences.com), and is also President of the San Diego Neuroscience Group at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. http://www.scripps.edu/services/sdneuro/ Dr. Maguire's blog, "Health, Stem Cells & Technology" can be viewed at: http://healthstemcellstechnology.blogspot.com/ Email:gmaguire@bioregenerativesciences.com
Recent Activity
Despite some recent news to the contrary, a revolution is taking place in medicine and therapeutics; the revolution is stem cell-based medicine and therapeutics. The news of Geron Corporation divesting itself of their pioneering stem cell therapeutics program has been taken as some to question the field of stem cell therapy.
Stem cells help overcome the second law of thermodynamics in the sub-system of the human body and provide age management tools.
A new stem cell technology in an eye drop for diabetic eye conditions of the cornea called keratopathy.
A new nutritional eye drop based on stem cell released molecule technology for easing cataract formation is described.
A revolution in healthcare is currently underway where systems-based personlaized therapeutics and medicine will become the norm in future years.
Scanners at the airport using X-ray technology potentially increase the risk for cancer, especially skin cancer. Alternative technologies exists and should be implemented to eliminate the potential cancer risk to airline passengers.
The End of Influence for the USA. Why has our economy been depleted and our world leadership role diminished? Professors Cohen and DeLong and Maguire explain. Dr. Maguire expains why we need the academic-industrial-government complex.
The world is not flat and there is a distinct economic tilt toward China because of unfair economic policies instituted by the Chinese government. The largest of the emerging economies, China, isn't allowing corrective economic process to evolve. Instead, the Chinese government does not have a free floating currency, rather China is keeping the value of its currency, the renminbi, artificially low and hurting US exports to China.
Like Asian governments, the US government must begin to set policy and work with US businesses to restore our economy. Such policy will necessarily require the demogoguery that now exits between Republicans and Democrats to cease, and for the two parties to engage in logical and meaningful dialague in a spirit of cooperation to rebuild US industry. In parallel, US businesses must view not only their short term goals, but also long term goals to maintain US production and innovation.
Stem cells are now being used very effectively for personalized regenerative medicine. Procedures, including autologous stem cell transplantation using fat derived mesenchymal stem cells, are provomg useful for many indications. These methods use a systems aproach to treat the malady which, unlike reductionist approaches, has in many cases been shown to provide greatly enhanced healing.
