Learning Efl by Bengali Speaking Learners: Major Linguistic Problems and Possible SolutionsThe present writer feels justified in identifying the major linguistic problems the Bengali speaking EFL learner encounters as well as in discovering the causes of the problems. Finally, he has made a number of recommendations with a view to addressing and lessening the problems, on the one hand, and ensuring the smooth and optimal learning of EFL on the other. Phonetic and Phonological Problems Encountered by the Bengali Speaking Efl Learner: How Can They be Overcome?Yhe present paper is an endeavour to identify the major phonetic and phonological problems encountered by the Bengali speaking EFL learner and to detect the causes of the problems as well. The paper ends with some suggestions for reducing the problems as well as ensuring the smooth and maximal learning of EFL pronunciation. Avoidance Behaviour in Efl Learning: a Study of UndergraduatesSince I am not aware of any research on the phenomenon of avoidance behaviour thus far conducted with Bengali speaking learners learning EFL, this study is designed to investigate the possibility of adoption, causes of adoption and effects of avoidance behaviour in EFL learning. To carry out the study, 75 first year BA (Hons) students in the Department of English at Jahangirnagar University have been tested on their avoidance behaviour and its causes and effects. A Quantitative Study of the Interaction Between the Learning Situation and the Proficiency of Efl Learners in Their Productive SkillsTo assess the impact of the learning situation on the proficiency of EFL learners in their productive skills, 41 learners at the tertiary level have been tested on their proficiency in the writing and speaking skills of the English language and their attitudes to the learning situation. The Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficients computed between the predictor and the criterion variables have produced the findings of the present study. The Use of Audio Aids in the Efl Class at the Tertiary Level: a Plus or a Minus?Audio aids function as learning facilitators and teaching machines, and motivate the learner and arrest his/her attention during the instructional process. Though such aids are greatly helpful in L2 teaching and continually expanding their scope with the availability and development of technology, their use in the EFL class especially at the tertiary level in Bangladesh is still limited. This study was then designed to address varied issues related to the use of audio aids in the EFL class. Relevance of the Study of Interlanguage to Teaching Efl at the Tertiary LevelThe present research has been designed to investigate and examine the relevance of the study of the interlanguage of 21 tertiary level students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). To carry out the study, an experimental group consisting of the 21 students and a control group having another 21 students of the same level have been used. Based on the findings, the researcher makes some linguistic and pedagogic recommendations. The Study of the Language Embodying and Transmitting Folklore: an Endeavour to Reveal Its Relevance to SociolinguisticsThis paper tries to examine and determine the relevance of the study of the language of folklore to sociolinguistics since folklore being constituted by all the facets of the traditions, customs and culture of the speech community is embodied and composed in, and manifested and transmitted by means of language, particularly speech, and sociolinguistics discovers and ascertains the relations of language to society. Teaching Efl Pronunciation: Why, What and How?Pronunciation is an integrated and integral part of second/foreign language learning since it directly affects learners’ communicative competence as well as performance. Notwithstanding, teaching EFL pronunciation is still peripheral and/or neglected in the syllabus, material and classroom, especially in Bangladesh. Therefore, based on my experience both as a student and a teacher-researcher as well as on a number of existing studies, this paper examines and addresses four major relevant issues.
