![]() Dr.Rohit Anand - ArticlesGINGIVAL AND PERIODONTAL DISEASES IN CHILDRENPeriodontium is a connective tissue organ covered by epithelium that attaches teeth to bone of Jaws and provide continually adapting apparatus for support of teeth donning function. It consists of gingival periodontal ligament alveolar bone and cementum. Oral hygiene maintainance in childrenThe colonization of the oral cavity starts about the time birth. Within hours after birth, the sterile oral cavity becomes colonized by low numbers of mainly facultative and aerobic bacteria.Keeping the dentition disease free is a challenge dental profession still needs to meet. The first carious lesion means caries process is controlled. The prevention of oral and dental diseases must begin during prenatal period in early infancy to ensure a successful outcome. NURSING CARIES AND RAMPANT CARIESCaries is defined as microbial disease of calcified tissues of teeth that is demineralization of inorganic components and subsequent breakdown of organic moieties of enamel and dentin. The word ‘caries’ is derived from Latin word meaning ‘rot’ or ‘decay’ it is a kin to the Greek word ‘ker’ meaning death. Calcium hydroxideCalcium hydroxide is a white, odorless powder, which when mixed with water or glycerin produces alkaline medium as high as pH 12.5. Calcium hydroxide has been successfully used by some clinicians in treating teeth with periapical granuloma, abscess and cyst. Perhaps the locally destructive action of calcium hydroxide with the high pH results in chemical cautery and is responsible for the breakdown of epithelium. COMPOSITE RESINSComposite can be used for most clinical applications.Itis being used more frequently not only in anterior permanent teeth but also in primary incisors. Formerly silver amalgam was widely used for restoration in primary anterior teeth. Amalgam has the disadvantage of being non-esthetic. Gold as an restorative materialDirect-filling golds contribute to both art and science of restorative dentistry. With the variety of forms that are now available and modern equipment for manipulating and compacting the gold, the time involved in placing the restoration has been reduced. If carefully manipulated by the dentist direct filling gold may provide life time service to patients and promote their oral health. MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPYMyofunctional therapy is a valuable adjunct in the treatment of malocclusion. Myofunctional appliances manage malocclusions given during, mixed dentition period or early permanent dentition period make use of growth potential and thus improve the profile of the patient.
