- Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems
16/10/2007 | Cell Phones Mobile communication is the application of wireless technology in the access network. The mobile communications were developed by the introduction of electromagnetic waves with radio frequencies. The first mobile communication was started in 1946s in USA. The mobile systems used in th first generation(1G) are analog(AMPS,NMT,TACS). The second generation mobile systems are digital systems(D AMPS,CDMA,GSM,JDC,DECT,ERMES, TETRA).
Due to limitations in 2G systems IMT made a proposal for the third generation mobile systems which are unified standards. UMTS is the 3G mobile system with data rates of 2MBPS while on stationary and 144KBPS while on mobility. UMTS offers benefits like low cost, ease of use, new and better services, fast access, improved mobility and coverage area. The limitations of UMTS are risk of further regulation and standardization. In order to ensure that UMTS flourishes in the long term, its capabilities must be progressively increased by the addition of new technologies. Use of smart antennas in mobile systems of 3G increases coverage area, low power consumption for the transfer of RF signals, longer battery life. Read
